The Spirituali were a (A member of a Catholic church) Catholic reform movement from about 1510 to the 1560s.
Most notable expression of the spirituali-doctrine was the anonymous Beneficio di Cristo, written in 1543.
It has been speculated that the Spirituali's lack of success stemmed from their hope for Church-reform without the challenge to Catholic authority, for a peaceful renewal from within so to say.

A madrigale spirituale (Italian; pl. madrigali spirituali) is a madrigal, or madrigal-like piece of music, with a sacred rather than a secular text.

Sulpitia Lodovica Cesis, a nun at the Augustinian convent of S. Geminiano in Modena, was the author of an important collection of Motetti spirituali for 2-12 voices, preserved in the Biblioteca Estense in Modena.
Born on 15 May 1577, she was daughter of the count Annibale Cesis and his wife Barbara.
Cesis' collection of Motetti spirituali is an important body of music both for the generally high quality of the works it contains and for the information it provides regarding performance practice in Italian convents in the early 17th century.

The convent, a center of musical excellence, and Cesis are both mentioned in contemporaary chronicles of Modena.
The music on this recording is taken from her only surviving works, a collection of Mottetti Spirituali.
Cesis eschewed the concertato style that dominated the 17th century, so stylistically her music is reminiscent of the polychoral works of Andrea Gabrieli or, in the case of the motet Angelus ed pastores, the stile antico.

 Vittoria Colonna
After individual poems had circulated privately, her first collection was published in 1538, Rime de la Divina Vittoria Colonna Marchesa di Pescara; this contained 136 of the poems that would come to be called rime amorose, praising the dead Pescara and mourning his loss.
But in an edition of the following year, 16 "sonetti spirituali" were advertised, and later editions included an ever-increasing number of rime spirituali, reflecting the shift of Colonna's focus.
The interest of this edition is that it uses the traditional division of the poems into rime amorose and rime spirituali (which Moody's site does not).
