SPIT - LoveToKnow Article on SPIT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A spit usually has one or more prongs to which the meat is fixed; in the case of a basket-spit it is enclosed in an oblong basket of iron wire.
The spits, when not in use, were placed in a spit-rack over the fireplace.
These primitive arrangements eventually gave place to a combined spit and mechanical roasting-jack, which was fixed to a small crane projecting from the mantelpiece.

 Rules of Card Games: Spit
Spit, also known as Speed, is a game for two players in which the aim is to get rid of your cards as fast possible.
Both players add any spit cards and stock cards remaining on their side to the spit pile they took, shuffle their cards well, and deal new layouts as before from the cards they have.
When playing with only one spit pile, the first player to get rid of their stock cards does not take any cards from the centre; the other player takes the single spit pile and the unplayed stock pile cards.

 Spit Tobacco
Keep in mind that the spit tobacco you or your friends are putting into your mouths contains many chemicals that can have a harmful effect on your health.
Spit tobacco contains a lot of sugar which, when mixed with the plaque on your teeth, forms acid that eats away at tooth enamel, causes cavities, and chronic painful sores.
An even more serious effect of spit tobacco is oral cancer, and the surgery for this could lead to removal of parts of your face, tongue, cheek or lip.

You will have to compile Spit yourself if you want to use it there (and even then you will only be able to use it for 31 days).

 Spit-Roasting
Spit-roasting may be done either with the carcass suspended over the coals on a horizontal spit which revolves to allow the meat to cook evenly, or on a cross spit which is stuck into the ground at an angle of 45 degrees.
Secure the spine of the carcass to the spit rod using wire that is looped around the spine and the spit rod and then tightened, by twisting with pliers, so that there is minimum ‘play’ between the spine and the spit rod.
Push the spit along the length of the carcass until it emerges through the middle of the neck or, in the case of a pig, through the mouth.

Insert the spit at the tail end of the beast, between the backbone and the layer of fat and connective tissue that covers it, and guide the point gently with your hand so that it emerges through the middle of the neck.

Cold Shower - How to spit with the wine pros. By Michael Steinberger
For wine aficionados, the choice is usually dictated by circumstance: At meals you swallow, at tastings you spit (unless the wines being tasted are liquid gold; it would be criminal to cough up even a drop of the 1989 Haut-Brion, for instance).
Thereafter, I got into the habit of spending a few minutes practicing spitting before heading off to wine country; usually, this involved taking a glass of water, standing in the doorway of the shower, and attempting to blast a cohesive stream out of my mouth.
One sentence in particular struck a nerve: " 'Spit with pride' might well be the wine taster's motto." It dawned on me that spitting was perhaps more important than I had imagined.

SPIT (spam over Internet telephony), sometimes known as vam (voice or VoIP spam), is unsolicited bulk messages broadcast over VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to phones connected to the Internet.
Although marketers already use voice mail for commercial messages, IP telephony makes a more effective channel because the sender can send messages in bulk instead of dialing each number separately.
SPIT is not much of a problem yet, simply because IP telephony is not widely used.

The Impact of Emerging Technologies: Talking Spam - Technology Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Though no real-life cases of SPIT have been documented, thats largely because there arent enough VoIP users to make it worthwhile for spammers, says Winn Schwartau, president of Interpact, a security consulting company in Seminole, FL.
But by monitoring factors such as the length of calls and the rate at which calls are being made from particular Internet addresses, Qovias software can identify and block up to 95 percent of SPIT before it reaches its intended recipients, says chief technology officer Choon Shim.
The company plans to incorporate the technology into its VoIP security software later this year, and if Qovia customers such as Nortel Networks build the software into their systems, SPIT may be one frustration we never have to face.
