 Floridian: Stranger on the shore
The gull also preens on the shore at East Beach, the spit of land that points toward the Sunshine Skyway.
Gulls can be hard to identify because their plumage changes according to season.
When a tourist feeds popcorn to the birds -- against park rules by the way -- the Heermann's gull holds its own.

Pallbearer's face bent into a crude and lascivious smile, as the stranger's touch reduced him to an obscene convulsion of inaudible giggles.
Pallbearer, hovering near my face in a constant rage, spit the toxic air of his breath up my nostrils, and into my brain, where it's putrid stench invaded my cells like a retrovirus in search of thoughts.
The stranger gently motioned for Pallbearer to give him his right hand, whereupon the white haired invader guided Pallbearer's fishy metacarpus into the front pocket of his oily colorless slacks.

Besides being labelmates, the two are friends, and the modest and shy Kracker felt more comfortable acting all romantic with someone he knew rather than a complete stranger.
Leave it to the unconventional Uncle Kracker, however, to prefer keeping his lips to himself to swapping spit with the lovely pop singer.
Ford plays Kracker's love interest in the video for his new single, "In a Little While," from his forthcoming album, No Stranger to Shame, due August 27.

Besides the normal drives for consolidation in today's chew-'em-up, spit-'em-out corporate world, QFC was threatening to infiltrate Freddy's Oregon stronghold, and QFC's role in the Pike and Broadway urban-strip-mall complex (with its food-drug-variety-banking combo) is too close to Freddy's under-one-roof hypermarket concept for Freddy's to afford to ignore.
It's not against a Freddy's in their part of town, just against it at that particular location.
The Q responded to this press-generated nonissue by running full page ads promising the Q will remain the Q. Tellingly, there've been no ads promising Freddy's would remain Freddy's; just a brief reassuring statement from Meyer management.

Myles uses the metaphor of institutions as a guideline reel to navigate the dark and tricky caverns of memory.
Like Chelsea Girls, her brilliant 1994 collection, Cool for You is written with a deadpan lyricism that reminds one of Frank O'Hara.
Over that time, the arc of the book and its theme of institutions changed.

Punk music and dance music have been swapping spit at least since Suicide, James Chance, and ESG, and while it's tempting to try to chart the braided ramifications of the relationship from there, this is a blog, not a book deal.
Vintage post-punk was no stranger to dance music, and whether this new breed was attempting to forge the synthesis anew or just rehashing the synthesis forged by forerunners remains ambiguous.
The transition is complete, and honest-to-god dance music (of the songier variety, natch) enters the indie landscape almost by accident.

VH1.com : Pavement : Pavement Refuse To Look Back
Performed live, the new songs "You Are a Light" (RealAudio excerpt) and "Spit on a Stranger" showed that Terror Twilight -- which was polished by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich -- is both Pavement's most straightforward album and their most catchy.
And then, singer/guitarist Malkmus, bassist Mark Ibold, guitarist Scott Kannberg, percussionist Bob Nastanovich and drummer Steve West served up a healthy helping of Terror Twilight's melodic pop, while offering little of the unbridled noise that marked earlier Pavement records.
It was an appropriate beginning to the show, the band's third of its current tour of small venues and the first of two sold-out Chicago dates.

There is even a Pavement cover ("Spit On a Stranger"), which makes you fully aware that though Nickel Creek's members are so incredibly prolific on their instruments in a genre like "bluegrass," they can also be prolific on the same instruments to interpret songs of pretty divergent genres--and interpret them well.
There are a few tracks sprinkled throughout the album that nod to the band's beginnings, and in these (particularly the evocative version of the traditional "House Carpenter" and the sprightly instrumental opener "Smoothie Song") a possible future for bluegrass may be glimpsed.
When they first made their nationwide splash with their 2000 debut album, teen bluegrass group Nickel Creek were one of the biggest mainstream crossovers since their producer/mentor Alison Krauss, successfully modernizing their tradition-conscious genre.

But even with songs that may seem like novelty, it'd be hard not to take Schoolyard Heroes seriously after seeing them live.
Ryann doesn't have to name titles like "Attack of the Puppet People," "Dawn of the Dead," or "The Eagles Klaw" to know that a first introduction to Schoolyard Heroes could easily result in people mistaking them for just another gimmicky zombie-rock act.

 Pavement: Terror Twilight: Pitchfork Review
While surefire singles "Spit On a Stranger" and "Carrot Rope" find Pavement at their most earnest, they bookend some of the band's meatiest and most esoteric work to date.
Now, I'm not so rash as to call Pavement "The American Radiohead"-— such a comparison would be sonically and chronologically flawed, as well as maddeningly cliched—- but as the decade that spawned them both is on the wane, the pair beg at least some mutual consideration.
Opening the nineties with the carefully careless Slanted and Enchanted, Pavement burst into almost immediate cult hero status as rock's keen grad school quipsters, but the band's artistic path proved nearly as confounding as one of its notoriously off- kilter melodies.

 Pavement Album Reviews
Fortunately, on tracks like “Platform Blues,” which sounds like several songs rolled into one, Pavement still wear their “alternative”/“indie” tags well, while the languid melodies of “Spit On A Stranger” and “Major Leagues” are among their most beautiful yet, with good lyrical hooks to boot.
The first EP shows the band in their infancy and features fast punk ditties, on which the lyrics are often inaudible amid the tape hiss and fuzzy guitars.
Like their last couple of albums, both of which I found disappointing at first, Terror Twilight took several spins to appreciate but eventually grew on me, though there are times when the album is a little too laid-back for its own good.
