Spitsbergen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spitsbergen (or Spitzbergen in German; formerly known as West Spitsbergen or Vestspitsbergen) is the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, situated in the Arctic Ocean.
Spitsbergen is one of three inhabited islands in the archipelago, and according to the terms of the Svalbard Treaty, citizens of any of the signatory countries may settle in the archipelago.
The largest settlement on Spitsbergen is the Norwegian town of Longyearbyen, while the second largest settlement is the Russian coal mining settlement of Barentsburg (which was sold by the Netherlands in 1932 to the Soviet company Arktikugol).

The Dispersal of Insects to Spitsbergen, by Charles S. Elton
That this conclusion is correct is shown by the striking gaps in the mammalian fauna of Spitsbergen.
There is thus a close analogy between Spitsbergen and Krakatoa, the former having had its flora and fauna blotted out by ice, and the latter by volcanic lava.
It is thus apparent that the dispersal of insects to Spitsbergen is partly dependent on religious movements.

Norwegian scientists think that the material from Spitsbergen can only give away its secrets by nuclear crushing; this because it does not change either at absolute zero, when air is liquified, or at the highest temperatures technically possible with our technology.
Even though this case is empty of substance, we may safely predict that it will continue to show up in print for years to come, as long as there are "researchers" who think it deserves their enthusiastic attention and will not allow prosaic truth to stand in their way.
