  Debunking a Spitting Image
The image of spat-upon veterans is the icon through which many people remember the loss of the war, the centerpiece of a betrayal narrative that understands the war to have been lost because of treason on the home front.
Many tellers of the spitting tales identify the culprits as girls, a curious quality to the stories that gives away their gendered subtext.
Debunking them one by one is unlikely to slow their proliferation but, by contesting them where and when we can, we engage the historical record in a way that helps all of us remember that, in the end, soldiers and veterans joined with civilians to stop a war that should have never been fought.

 Spitting image
One of the very first questions that was asked at the Phrasefinder bulletin board was about 'spitting image'.
The numerous forms of the term 'spitting image' - spit and image, spitten image, the dead spit of etc., appear not to derive from 'split' but from 'spit'.
Some commentators have suggested that 'spit' may be a corruption of 'spirit', but that appears to be fanciful and isn't backed up by any early examples of 'spirit and image'.

Straight Dope Staff Report: What's the origin of "spitting image"?
The term "spittin' image" is a shortening of the original "spit and image," which means that you are both the stuff that your parents are made of (the spit) and you look like them, too (the image).
Some of the folk etymologies have the spit (expectoration) and image (a doll) used in a fl magic ceremony to clone you; others cite "spat" (the offspring of shellfish) as part of the origin.
In other words, the original would have been, "She's the very spirit and image of her mother." Other authorities favor the phrase "spitting image" means a "speaking likeness" and reference a 1602 source in support of this.

Similar images were common in post-World War I Germany and France after Indochina; Lembcke suggests the Nixon administration cultivated this notion of betrayal because it stigmatized both the antiwar movement and veterans against the war.
While violence and 'spitting' did occur, it was normally against the peace activist or even the anti-war veteran, who received the harshest treatment from hawks and mainstream veterans organizations who looked down on them for losing the war.
Moreover, the earliest examples of "spitting" being referenced during the war pertain to pro-war folks threatening to spit on anti-war protesters.

Most major dictionaries report that spitting image is an alteration of spit and image.
In an article in American Speech, however, Larry Horn argues that the expression was originally spitten image (spitten being a now-archaic dialectal form of the past participle of spit), and that both spit and image and spitting image are later reinterpretations.
Both the splitting image and spirit and image explanations are considered and rejected in Horn’s American Speech article.

 Spitting Image
Many Americans carry the image in their heads: The Vietnam vet, returning from war, gets off the plane in San Francisco and is greeted by protesters with shouts of “Baby killer!” Then, out of the crowd, a protester rushes forward and spits on the vet.
This image is so widespread that by early 1991 (during the Persian Gulf war) polls showed that the majority of the American people believed the anti—Vietnam war movement had been anti-soldier and had, in many cases, actually spat upon returning troops.
In The Spitting Image Jerry Lembcke shows how this image is a myth that serves the interests of the powerful who led the U.S. to war.

 World Wide Words: Spitting image
Larry Horn, Professor of Linguistics at Yale, argues convincingly that the original form was actually spitten image, using the old dialectal past participle form of spit.
He suggests that the phrase was reinterpreted when that form went out of use, first as spit ’n’ image and then as spit and image or spitting image.
Quite a different origin is suggested by other writers, who argue that spit is really an abbreviation of spirit, suggesting that someone is so similar to another as to be identical in mind as well as body.
