 The Spix's Macaw
Spix's Macaw Cyanopsitta spixii occupies a monotypic genus and is one of the least known of Neotropical parrots.
During June and July 1990, a search for wild Spix's Macaws was carried out over a large portion of the species's range as suggested by previous published sources and, in particular, by certain recent unconfirmed reports.

This discovery is extremely important as it is the first Spix's macaw to be "found" that is outside of the original birds (and their descendants) that became part of the Spix's macaw program initiated by the now disbanded Committee for the Recovery of the Spix's Macaw, formed by IBAMA in 1990.
The Spix's Macaw is the only species in its genus Cyanopsitta, and one of only four species of "blue macaws." Of the other three, the Glaucous Macaw has not been reliably sighted in over 50 years despite systematic searches and is presumed extinct.
Because virtually all the remaining captive Spix's Macaws are extremely close relatives, this bird has the exciting potential to make a unique genetic contribution to the recovery of this species, quite possibly saving the bird from extinction.

The only known Spixs Macaw Cyanopsitta spixii (Critically Endangered) in the US has been returned to a zoo in Brazil, from where it will be transferred to the Spixs Macaw captive breeding programme in Recipe.

Howard, I haven't heard of it yet, but it could, indeed, only refer to the Spix's Macaw, of which only a single male remained in a small area of the lower Rio Sao Francisco area in Bahia, Brazil.
One other macaw species, the Lear's Macaw, living in about the same area, is critically endangered, with its present population estimated at about 139 birds, plus 13 in captivity.
