IX. Neurology. 1F. The Great Plexuses of the Sympathetic System. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
It is formed by the cardiac nerves derived from the cervical ganglia of the sympathetic, and the cardiac branches of the vagus and recurrent nerves.
The suprarenal plexus (plexus suprarenalis) is formed by branches from the celiac plexus, from the celiac ganglion, and from the phrenic and greater splanchnic nerves, a ganglion being formed at the point of junction with the latter nerve.
The nerves composing this plexus are white in color and firm in texture; in the upper part of the plexus close to the origin of the superior mesenteric artery is a ganglion (ganglion mesentericum superius).

A striking analogy exists between the splanchnic and the cardiac nerves.
The splanchnic nerves, also three in number, are connected probably with all the thoracic ganglia, and are distributed to important organs in the abdominal cavity.

Splanchnic nerves arise from chain ganglia and are distributed via autonomic plexuses to viscera in the thorax; the cardiac, pulmonary, esophageal and aortic plexuses.
Splanchnic nerves from the lower 7 sympathetic chain ganglia also give off postganglionic fibers; but, in addition, these lower ganglia give rise to three specifically named (i.e., Greater, Lesser, and Least) splanchnic nerves which are mostly preganglionic.
The greater splanchnic nerves are formed by branches from the 5th to the 9th thoracic ganglia.

Splanchnic nerves - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The splanchnic nerves are part of the autonomic nervous system.
Most autonomic nerves synapse in the sympathetic trunk along the spinal cord, but splanchnic nerves pass through the trunk, travel near their target organ, and synapse in prevertebral ganglia.
Pelvic splanchnic nerves enervate the pelvic and genital organs, regulating the emptying of the urinary bladder and the rectum as well as sexual functions like erection and orgasm.

The solar plexus and the splanchnic nerves convey, in parallel to the vegetative nerve fibres of the sympathetic nerve system, sensitive fibres of gastric, pancreatic, hepatic and mesenteric origin.
The splanchnic nerves are located on the same level as the coeliaque plexus but circulate behind the pillars of the diaphragm, in front of the vertebrae.
Among cancer patients, the pains are caused by the compression of or the invasion of the nerve structures by the tumour.

Preganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the vagus nerve pass through each of the ganglia comprising the Celiac Ganglion Complex and are distributed with the blood vessels until they reach their appropriate terminal ganglia in the wall of their target organs.
Splanchnic nerves from these sympathetic chain ganglia are mostly postganglionic sympathetic fibers which may pass through a prevertebral ganglion or travel directly to the organs via the arteries.
The vagus nerve innervates all structures related to the GI tract from the esophagus to the splenic flexure of the large intestine.
