wbab.com: Music Offspring Album No Longer 'Chinese Democracy'
Punk rockers The Offspring have officially changed the title of their upcoming new album to Splinter.
A post on the Offspring's official website acknowledges that "the decision to title the album Chinese Democracy had brought production to a halt." Splinter is scheduled for release on November 11th, 2003.
Drummer Josh Freese of A Perfect Circle handled the sticks on the new Offspring album, after drummer Ron Welty left the band earlier this year.

Longtime fans will be more than happy with Splinter, which crams every last piece of the Offspring puzzle -- slickly produced rock racket, hints of anti-establishment rabble-rousing, and reams of relationship and strip mall culture gaggery -- into its brief half-hour run time.
It's more mixing of stylized punk revival and hybridism with left-field musical experimentation and in-the-now pop culture lyrical references on Splinter, the Offspring's seventh full-length.
Alternative releases are different issues or variant issues of the same album.

It was later re-issued and released on CD for the first time on November 21, 1995 on Nitro Records and also on Epitaph Records, with a new album cover but otherwise identical.

With Splinter, the Offspring reasserts its sibling staying power with style, which keeps it looking relatively fly for a bunch of dorky white guys.
Before this punk outfit shuffles off to the rocking old people’s home, however, it’s given us plenty of new earsplitting noise with the album Splinter.

By far the best track on the album is “Spare Me the Details.” The upbeat, acoustic guitar driven tear-jerker is a poignant version of what it feels like to be cheated on; at least, as much as someone who uses the word “ho” in a song could give.

U-WIRE.com/CD REVIEW: New Offspring album will 'Splinter' fans
While "Splinter" is not the Offspring's best album, it certainly holds its own and listeners with an open mind could find themselves listening to this album as much as any other Offspring release.
"Splinter" really follows directly in the footsteps of the bands previous album, 2001's "Conspiracy Of One," and while "Splinter" is an excellent record it never quite reaches the marvels of the previous, severely under appreciated and undersold, album.
Their hit album, "Smash," was groundbreaking, but not in the way that the band combined punk attitude and pace with pop melodies.

ROCKZONE.COM: CD Reviews: The Offspring - Splinter
The album, originally titled Chinese Democracy as a shot at Axl Rose, the band chose Splinter so as not to get the album delayed because of possible entanglements the band might get into, and also for the thematic nature of the whole album, splintered throughout.
The album begins with a huge kick in the form of "The Noose", which recalls some of the faster songs off of Conspiracy of One, with an added punch and dosage that was not in that album.
Splinter is a definitely impressive 7th effort from the group, and doesn't disappoint very many times.

This album isn't as great as their other ones...and although the sound is good, it's pretty much the same thing as Conspiracy...perhaps a bit of Americana is mixed in their too.
