Splinter (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Splinter is an album released by The Offspring on December 9, 2003.
The original title for Splinter was Chinese Democracy, which was announced as a threat to Axl Rose (singer of the hard rock band Guns N' Roses), after his long-awaited album, titled Chinese Democracy, was put on hold.

ROCKZONE.COM: CD Reviews: The Offspring - Splinter
The album, originally titled Chinese Democracy as a shot at Axl Rose, the band chose Splinter so as not to get the album delayed because of possible entanglements the band might get into, and also for the thematic nature of the whole album, splintered throughout.
The album begins with a huge kick in the form of "The Noose", which recalls some of the faster songs off of Conspiracy of One, with an added punch and dosage that was not in that album.
Splinter is a definitely impressive 7th effort from the group, and doesn't disappoint very many times.

Splinter Shards The Birth Of Seperation - * * *
Splinter Shards is basically midpaced metalcore with little to distinguish it except the decidedly Christian slant to its lyrics and the exceptional talent of the band's drummer.
The album is loosley based on the film Event Horizon which is an extremely terrifying sci fi horror movie about a lost spaceship which has crossed into hell through a space-time warp and come back as a demon posessed ghost ship.

U-WIRE.com/CD REVIEW: New Offspring album will 'Splinter' fans   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Their hit album, "Smash," was groundbreaking, but not in the way that the band combined punk attitude and pace with pop melodies.
"Splinter" really follows directly in the footsteps of the bands previous album, 2001's "Conspiracy Of One," and while "Splinter" is an excellent record it never quite reaches the marvels of the previous, severely under appreciated and undersold, album.
While "Splinter" is not the Offspring's best album, it certainly holds its own and listeners with an open mind could find themselves listening to this album as much as any other Offspring release.

 Rarebird's Splinter Reviews
Splinter was essentially a two-man vocal group consisting of Bill Elliott and Bobby Purvis.
Splinter was the first artist signed to Harrison's Dark Horse label, when it was still partnered with A&M. All of Splinter's albums are out of print.
That album was the self-titled Splinter, which was released in England in 1980 on the Bellaphon label.

 CD Baby: SPLINTER: The Emptying
Splinter hit the scene in 1997 with a musical style so broad that descriptions have ranged from "acoustic dreaminess" with "entrancing lyrics" to "industrialized throttle" and "industrial with a heart." Subsequent years found the band touring the east coast, drawing fans from New York to Florida and captivating audiences with an intense live show.
"Splinter is a modern rock band driven by their catchy tunes and meaningful lyrics.
Their use of the acoustic guitar creates a full sound in their latest album, The Emptying, which is the only one I've heard so far.

The album was sadly, very short and could use to be much longer, although I can have enjoyed all the songs on it by the time I get to school.
This album isn't as great as their other ones...and although the sound is good, it's pretty much the same thing as Conspiracy...perhaps a bit of Americana is mixed in their too.
Although it is a pretty steady album it doesn't compare much with their earlier albums such as Smash and Inxay on the Hombre.

The Collegian Online: Splinter'-ing from the usual   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
“Splinter” is the lost album before going “Americana,”; which essentially tried to please everyone, while staying confined to the shallow musical boundaries that Offspring knows how to explore.
On “Splinter,” the songs are different enough to keep the listener’s attention, but then, no one could ever accuse The Offspring of being boring.
By far the best track on the album is “Spare Me the Details.” The upbeat, acoustic guitar driven tear-jerker is a poignant version of what it feels like to be cheated on; at least, as much as someone who uses the word “ho” in a song could give.

'Splinter' is the seventh studio album from Californian punk outfit The Offspring.
The Noose has good guitar and bass, and is generally one of the best songs on the album, despite the terrible drums (which are done on a computer, and I'll be faulting that a lot) and the singing being average.

As with their first two albums, Harrison contributes a great deal (including stunning slide guitar on the wonderful "Round and Round"), as well as providing his home studio for the recording.
Bill Elliot and Robert Purvis (the actual members of Splinter, hence the title Two Man Band) harmonize perfectly throughout, and their vocals are strong, and although most of the songs are average to good, the production is far too slick.
This album is not essential listening however, and somewhat of a disappoint following their first two brilliant releases.

The album's obligatory gag song is "When You're in Prison," offering sage advice for the prison newbie that sounds like a 1930s-era folk field recording.

If I had to guess, guitarist Noodles was listening to a lot of old Judas Priest and Dio albums before and during the recording of Splinter, as several of the songs reflect that early '80s metal sound (sans the solos).

Rolling Stone : Splinter : Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Splinter does have its share of serious moments, as on the opener, "Neocon," a vague, Fugazi-esque statement of purpose ("We will not compromise/We will never lose to you").
But mostly Splinter relies on a familiar collection of party-hearty and slamming sounds: catchy pogo punk ("Long Way Home"), sludgy pseudo-grunge ("Race Against Myself"), reggae-lite jams ("The Worst Hangover Ever") and lighthearted ditties about romantic dysfunction ("Spare Me the Details").
Ironically, Splinter drags when the Offspring are most faithful to their roots -- trad-punk numbers such as "Lightning Rod" are a bit too reverential.

After a three year hiatus from their last recorded effort, the Offspring had an opportunity to close out 2003 with a killer album.
A resume of mediocrity might be somewhat more acceptable if balanced by frequency and regularity; however, a new album every two of three years warrants much keener attention to quality.
But when compared to many of the new releases by the current wave of bands, the album will be exposed as a half-hearted effort wringed by missed opportunities and wasted potential.
