Split-finger fastball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A split-finger fastball or splitter is a pitch in baseball and a variant of the straight fastball.
A split finger fastball is more of a hard breaking pitch than a fastball.
When thrown hard, it appears to be a fastball to the batter, but suddenly "drops off the table" towards home plate—that is, it suddenly moves down, towards the batter's knees.

 Split Fingered Fastball
The fingers are split outside the narrow seams of the horseshoe with the thumb moved form under to the side.
The split of the fingers changes the rotation slightly as well as decreasing the the # of rotations.
The effect is a slightly off center rotation and a ball that dives sharply at or near the plate.

 Fastball
A variation on the fastball is the forkball and the similar split-finger fastball.
Gripping the ball with the fingers across the wide part of the seam ("four-seam fastball") produces a straight pitch, gripping it across the narrow part ("two-seam fastball") produces a sinking fastball, and holding a two-seam fastball off-center ("cut fastball") imparts lateral movement to the fastball.
Fastballs are usually thrown with backspin, so that the Magnus effect creates an upward force on the ball, causing it to fall less rapidly than might be expected.

 NAYSI: FAQ #106
The pitches in question are the sinker about which you asked and the fastball, cut fast ball, splitter or split finger fastball and slider.
Finger and thumb placement is similar to that of the sinker, but in the opposite direction.
If the fingers are placed far apart with the ball forced into the web of the fingers, it becomes a fork ball.

 Clemens speeding toward 300 wins
The idea of Koufax having a split-finger fastball to go with those two pitches seems as daunting as the prospect of his being allowed to pitch with the mound moved 15 feet closer to the plate.
Consider the plight of the hitter as Clemens' split-finger fastball approaches the plate.
The circle change gets its name from the grip: the pitcher uses his thumb and index finger to form a circle on the side of the ball, then grips the ball with his other fingers.

Split finger fastball question - Knuckleball Pitching Community
It is necessary, I believe, to apply this pressure in opposition to the middle finger, which is stronger and longer than the index finger.
The split is wider than a splitter (which does not necessarily bisect the ball).
With the forkball, as thrown by Contreras, the thumb is on the side and right near the end of the index finger and there is pressure on the thumb.

 Splitter may better arm Anderson
With a split-finger fastball and an adjustment on the pitching rubber, Anderson received encouraging results in his spring debut as the Diamondbacks rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox in front of 12,005 fans.
The most significant difference Saturday was Anderson's use of a split-finger fastball.
The Diamondbacks are banking on a rebound after Anderson was nagged by freak injuries and inconsistency that led to a 4-9 record and 5.25 ERA and a demotion to the bullpen in the final month of the season.

Sporting News, The: A Grip On Greatness - New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens wins 19 of his first 20 decisions in 2001
The effectiveness of Clemens' split-finger fastball doesn't depend so much on the high velocity of his bread-and-butter pitch, which is important because he can't always count on his fastball reaching the upper 90s.
Instead of placing his index finger and middle finger together, they are split wider apart--the wider, the better--and the ball is held between them.
The 98-mph fastballs he is throwing at his baseball overripe age of 39 are further testimony that Clemens is perhaps the best power pitcher in the history of the game.

The Seattle Times: Mariners: Notebook: Putz puts his name in M's pitching plans
While part of Putz's effectiveness involves trading in his curveball for a split-finger fastball, Meche's good work is based on trashing his slider last year and going to a curveball.
Outside of one high fastball that went for a double and a run, the right-hander looked Opening Day strong.
He allowed only two hits and struck out four, throwing hard and mixing his mid-90s fastball with a power curveball.

Baseball America - 2003 Independent League Player of the Year: Jason Shelley
His velocity has never been overwhelming--he throws an 88-91 mph fastball with a 78-80 mph split and a curve--but ever since he added the split-finger to his arsenal in 2002, he's piled up plenty of strikeouts.
Double-A batters didn't have much more success than indy ball hitters at picking up the split, as he went 3-2, 2.63 for Huntsville with 53 strikeouts in 55 innings.
Scouts who saw Shelley pitch in the Southern League say he has potential as a big league reliever thanks to his split.

Steven Ellis' Free Baseball Pitching Tips Blog (The Complete Pitcher's Blog): Baseball Pitching Grips
Typically, the split-finger fastball is only effective if a pitcher has big hands and/or long fingers because the pitch itself needs to be "choked" deep in the hand in order to get its downward movement.
Most Major League starting pitchers throw just three pitches: a fastball (and its variations: two-seam, four-seam), a change-of-speed pitch (like a change-up) and a two-plane pitch (like a curveball, splitter or slider).
With the fastball, the hand is directly behind the ball, and the index- and middle-fingers are on top of the baseball.

The repertoire of pitches in the major leagues
Description: By making the "circle" with their thumb and index fingers, pitchers can throw this pitch with the same arm action as a fastball.
It is gripped on the pads of the fingers, which differentiates it from the forkball, which is thrown with ball wedged deeper into the "V" between the index and middle fingers.
Hitters think a fastball is coming and often jump out on their front foot, which results in swinging strikes, foul balls or weak grounders as they try to slow down their swings.

 The Christian Science Monitor csmonitor.com
To try to take power off the ball, the thumb and first finger form a circle on one side of the ball while the second finger (the middle finger) is moved off to the side.
It looks like a fastball and is often the preferred pitch of right handers against left-handed hitters, because it has a mean inclination to go down and in.
Originally, there were two basic pitches, the fastball and the so-called outdrop, which became known as the curve ball.

 How to Throw a Splitter - eHow.com
The splitter, or split-finger fastball, resembles a fastball in both velocity and direction as it heads toward the plate.
Grip the ball as you would a two-seam fastball, holding it with your middle and index fingers at the point where the seams are closest to each other.
When you throw it, your middle finger splits the ball.
