Spock's Beard have survived the loss of Neal Morse who allegedly left the band after God told him to, and have turned in an excellent album that stands alongside the rest of their back catalogue.
Having said that there are a few pointers as to where Spock's Beard may hitch their wagon in the future.
Shining Star is I suppose what many would call a power ballad however Spock's Beard do the song justice and who knows perhaps this may well be an avenue the band may well want to move along in the future.

Spock's Beard have always had a sound that is instantly recognisable (and still do) and although Neal has left the band, the four remaining members show with Feel Euphoria that they possess much of the chemistry that made this sound.
Spock's Beard cannot turn back the hands of time and have accepted Neal's departure and I feel we should also accept this and move forward with the band.

At their best, Spock's Beard mix the booming bass/high-pitched organ sound of early Yes with the long as heck progressive music Yes with the 80s radio-friendly rock Yes right on through to their present day smooth beautiful moody relaxed dense pop music.
The rest of Spock's Beard decided to continue without Neal, figuring that surely their fans were never into the band because of the songwriting and vocals.

Spocks Beard is really cool too...i've seen them twice at Progfest in LA...and both times I was blown away...they too are highly symphonic and seem to borrow much from 70's Yes, 70's Pink Floyd and early Gabriel solo stuff circa 3rd.
According to a Spock's Beard poll (results will be out this week, for those e-proggers that are on 'Thoughts' (SB-Mailing List), too), "Beware Of Darkness" is the favorite of about half the Bearded ones.
BEARD is a Band influenced by YES, THE BEATLES, GENTLE GIANT, GENESIS and KING CRIMSON (Islands period) I think that the influences they manage better are GIANTs and CRIMSONs, which appear less evident (with some exceptions of GIANTs sometimes) on the Music, but they are extremely well inserted along their work.

The first 2 tracks are typically wonderful Spocks Beard sounding songs, it's when we get to the track "Surfing Down The Avalanche" that things turn really heavy, and this will probably surprise a lot of their older fans out there.
Other tracks of note are the hauntingly beautiful ballard "She Is Everything" a cracking instrumental track called "NWC" with its ripping synths from Ryo, searing lead guitar work from Morse, and the gymnastic rhythm section of Dave Meros on bass and D'Virgilio's frantic drum work.
For me this is a step in the right direction for the all new Spocks Beard, it still contains elements of what made SB what they are today, but they are now showing what they can do without Neal at the helm.
