Spofford is on the Southern Pacific Railroad at the intersection of State Highway 131 and Farm Road 1572, ten miles south of Brackettville in south central Kinney County.
Spofford began to expand south of the railroad by 1906, when a large portion of land was subdivided and prepared for settlement.
In 1989 Spofford had an estimated population of seventy, and in 1990 the population was sixty-eight.

Amherst Spofford enlisted at the age of 43 into the 3rd Maine Infantry, Company G on September 18, 1862 as a private.
Spofford was transferred to the Navy on April 15, 1864.
Spofford wrote to his wife (4 pages; February 14, 1864) from his regiment's camp along the Rapidan River about the war-torn country surrounding him and a midnight action the 3rd Maine conducted during the battle of Chancellorsville the previous spring.

Both Spofford and Del Rio are typical localities of that portion of the Rio Grande Plain lying west of the Anacacho Mountains, and are situated on the downthrown side of the Balcones monocline, where the stratigraphic conditions necessitate the embedding of the water bearing.

Ainsworth Rand Spofford was born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, on September 12, 1825; he died on August 11, 1908, and is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, DC.
