  Spoiler effect - Electowiki
The spoiler effect is a term to describe the effect a candidate can have on a close election, in which their candidacy results in the election being won by a candidate dissimilar to them, rather than a candidate similar to them.
A voting system which satisfies the independence of irrelevant alternatives criterion is immune to the spoiler effect, but Arrow's impossibility theorem shows that rank-voting systems are unable to satisfy this criterion without exhibiting other undesirable properties as a consequence.
The spoiler effect is one of the components contributing to the effect known as Duverger's law, which states that the first-past-the-post election system creates and preserves a two-party system.

The spoiler effect is a term to describe the effect of a third party candidacy on a close election, possibly tipping the balance between two relatively close leading candidates.
The effect is common in the first-past-the-post election system, in which the candidate that receives a plurality of votes (and not necessarily a majority of votes) wins the election.
A novel attempt at an end run[?] around the spoiler effect was attempted by numerous groups during the 2000 U. election campaign.

Other voting systems, such as approval voting or instant-runoff voting, are less vulnerable to spoiler effects, but Arrow's impossibility theorem shows that no voting system that meets other reasonable criteria can avoid such effects completely.
The "spoiler" part of the phrase (which is usually used by the losing party), usually implies that the third party candidate in question is more similar to the losing party then the winning party.
One example of the spoiler effect at work was the 2000 U.S. Presidential election.

Spoilers are a simple method for reducing lift, although adding them randomly can make things worse.

Perot's almost 19% of the popular vote made him the most successful third-party presidential candidate in terms of popular vote since Theodore Roosevelt in the 1912 election.
Some analysts believe that Perot acted as a spoiler in the election, primarily drawing votes away from Bush and allowing Clinton to win many states with less than a majority of votes.
Perot managed to finish ahead of one of the two major party candidates in two states: In Maine, Perot received 30.44% of the vote to Bush's 30.39% (Clinton won Maine with 38.77%); In Utah, Perot received 27.34% of the vote to Clinton's 24.65% (Bush won Utah with 43.36%).
