The Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway (AAR reporting mark SPS) was a United States-based railroad incorporated in 1905.
It was a joint venture by the Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railway to build a railroad along the north bank of the Columbia River.
In 1970, it merged with the Great Northern Railway, the Northern Pacific Railway, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad to form the Burlington Northern Railroad.

 Oregon Electric Railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jim Hill's Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway purchased the system in 1910, and extended service to Eugene in 1912.
Regular passenger service along the Willamette Valley ended in June 30, 1933, though freight operations continued and the railway survived into the 1990s (ultimately as a Burlington Northern feeder).
BN operated the last freight train on this mainline on December 31, 1994, in preparation for the line's changeover to TriMet light rail usage.

The Pacific Railroad Preservation Association (PRPA) is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to restoring, maintaining, and operating historic railway equipment of the Pacific Northwest.

At the last minute, however, she was spared and in 1958 was donated to the City of Portland for use in a proposed rail museum.

The Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway was built by James J. Hill, the "Empire Builder," who also built the Great Northern Railway and who controlled the Northern Pacific and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroads.
GN and NP trains originally reached Portland via the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company, which followed the south side of the Columbia River for much of its route.
In response, Hill decided to build a new line from Spokane to Portland along the north bank of the river.

Burlington Northern Railroad (BN) was created in 1970 with the merger of four primary railroads: Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co.; Northern Pacific Railway Co. (NP); Great Northern Railway Co. (GN); and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway Co. (SP&S).
In 1980, the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Co. (Frisco) was acquired and merged into BN.
