Spokane (pronounced "spoh-KAN" [spoʊˈkæn]) is the county seat of Spokane County in the State of Washington.
Situated at the foot of a valley, midway between the rise and mouth of the Spokane River, it is 280 miles east of Seattle and 375 miles northeast of Portland.
Spokane is also home to a National Historic Landmark hand-carved carousel, created in 1909 by Charles Looff as a wedding present for his daughter.

Seattle and International Railroad emerged from the reorganization, and continued for another five years when it then became part of Northern Pacific.
Though it was rebuilt, by 1900 railroad congestion along the waterfront prompted the railroads to relocate their operations to the east.

Like many "children" of bigger railroads, the TS locomotive and caboose rosters were populated with items handed down from its parent, the Western Pacific, as well as second-hand equipment from other sources.
The last locomotives purchased by the TS were a pair of Alco RS1s, originally built for the Spokane International.

The Spokane International Railway, the "SI," was built between Spokane, Washington, and a connection with the Canadian Pacific southwest of Cranbrook near the border crossing town of Kingsgate.
The SI, which is now part of the Union Pacific Railroad, proved to be a key link in the CPR system and gave the Canadian Pacific access to the Inland Empire centre of Spokane and its many railroads including the Union Pacific which in turn gave direct connections to Portland, Oregon.
In the 1890s, he had built railroads from Spokane to Nelson and Rossland in British Columbia and in 1898, these lines were acquired by the Great Northern.

In 1911 the SIR junction was moved back up the B.C. Southern line a couple of miles to Yahk where a 40,000 gallon octagonal water tank was being built that year to compliment the coaling tower that had been raised the previous year.
Low patronage, however, forced the discontinuance of the Train de Luxe “Spokane Flyer” on February 14th, 1914, and though the completion of the KVR in 1915 further reduced the SIR’s traffic, CP exercised its option to accumulate 52% of SIR’s stock in November of 1916 and assumed control of the line.
In 1955, needing larger yards than were available at Yahk for their SIR operations, the partners built a new yards across the Boundary at Eastport and removed the line’s terminus thence.
