Filecloud - Spore Presentation from GDC 2005
Spore is a simulation computer game designed by Will Wright that is currently in development by Maxis to be published by EA Games.
Spore is, at first glance, an evolution game: the player molds and guides a single-celled species across many generations, until it becomes intelligent, at which point the player begins molding and guiding a society into a spacefaring civilization.

The game is created so that simple choices on the part of the consumer--mouth shape, leg placement and so on--will be amplified by the computer's physics and behavior models to create creatures worthy of a Pixar movie, he said.
Game players move their feet on a special mat to correspond to arrows that scroll on the TV screen.
News.com has an article about how games are focusing more and more on customization and letting players design the worlds and characters for the game using the game's game engine.

Gaming Steve: Pictures of Will Wright's Spore!
I understand the need to have the entire game on ones computer so that no stupids kids go and blow everyone's planets up, but it would be nice if there was a server you could log into (with your completed planet) and enter into a "Galaxy server", in which you could interact with real people.
The game isn't stated to be released until "Fall 2006" and that is still a rough timeline.
While you are playing, if the game needs a new creature (for example, a suitable predator for your creature) that doesn't exist in your world, then it will download one from the server and populate your world with it.

Following several years of development, Spore was first introduced to the public on March 11, 2005 in Wright's lecture about "procedural content generation" at the Game Developers Conference.

Demoscene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although demos are still a more or less obscure form of art even in the traditionally active demoscene countries, the scene has had an impact on areas such as computer games industry and new media art.
Sometimes demos even provide direct influence even to game developers that have no demoscene affiliation: for instance, Will Wright names demoscene as a major influence on the new Maxis game Spore, which is largely based on procedural content generation and is being programmed by many demoscene veterans.
The demoscene is a computer subculture that came to prominence during the rise of the 16/32-bit micros (the Atari ST and the Amiga), but demos first appeared during the 8-bit era on computers such as the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum.

Couple this with the fact that the game will automatically upload your gameplay content to other players and download everyone else's ecological and cultural data to your computer, and you're talking about the potential to truly explore a virtual universe consisting of millions of planets on your hard drive.
Determined to prove that their game has lost nothing but its competition, EA's Tiburon team used E3 to demonstrate new innovations to Madden NFL such as "QB Vision Control," a range-of-vision dynamic that impacts the quarterback's ability to complete passes.
This game has been consistently championing the cause of weapons fighting with brilliant action, consistently improving presentation, a constantly growing stable of combatants, and innovative features.

Book Review: Video Game Books - New York Times
Castronova is an economist who teaches telecommunications at Indiana University, and among academic economists he is a bold contrarian, if only because he dares to take computer games seriously.
They've organized their history of video games as a study of ambitious individuals, breaking it down into a series of breezy, magazinelike profiles of uneven quality.
A disproportionate number of these games revolve around dwarfs, wizards, quests and magic lands, though the content is becoming ever more diverse.

These were not initially called demos but rather letter, message, etc. Ironically, quite a few of the young talents that spent their time "coding" demos and thus gaining in-depth experience programming computer graphics later ended up working in the games industry, whose products they had initially cracked.
Sometimes demos even provide direct influence even to game developers that have no demoscene affiliation: for instance, Will Wright names demoscene as a major influence on the new Maxis game Spore, which is largely based on procedural content generation and is being programmed by many demoscene veterans.
