Sport is not in itself Community policy, such as agricultural policy or social policy etc. However, the European Union supports activities that are directly or indirectly related to sports.
Sport in the European Union is both a major activity in our leisure time, and a significant economic activity which creates jobs.
The Union needs to be aware of the concerns and opinions of people in sports as it drafts community laws; while sports authorities must be kept well informed of developments in the Union that will affect their activities.

 EASE – European association of Sport Employers
The second project, lead by EOSE (European observatory of sport employment), called " Preparing for a Social Dialogue Committee in the Sport sector Final, Report, November 2002 ", was the occasion for European and national social partners to declare their will to build a Social Dialogue committee for the sport sector in a next future.
Those studies identified the growing employment potential in the sport sector across the European Union countries and revealed that the Social Dialogue is perceived by all the players as the key factor to improve the professionalism of the sector.
Voluntary sport is the original segment of the sport sector and still is the most important one.

The objective of the European Year of Education through Sport 2004 was to encourage partnerships between the worlds of education and sport in order to promote the educational and social values of sporting activity.
The Nice European Council, in December 2000, drew attention to sport's "social function in Europe, of which account should be taken in implementing common policies".
The European Year was open to participation by the 25 Member States, the countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Economic Area (EEA), in accordance with the conditions laid down in the EEA Agreement.

The European Canoe Association awarded Britain the right to host the event which will be staged at the National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham in June 2009.

The Sports Ministers of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and UK, in the context of the UK Presidency of the EU, decided to launch an Independent Review to consider and provide tangible recommendations for the implementation of the Nice Declaration of 2000.
The Independent Review is divided in two main parts, one dealing with the specific nature of sport in European Union law generally, and the other using football as a case study.
