Dino (car) - WOI Encyclopedia Italia
The Dino was a brand for mid-engined, rear-drive sports cars produced by Ferrari from 1968 to 1976.
Enzo Ferrari asked Fiat to co-produce a sports car using the engine, and the front-engined, rear-drive Fiat Dino was born.
It has the soft edges and curving lines typical of earlier Italian cars, unlike the later performance cars from Ferrari such as the Bertone-designed 308 GT4 which has the straighter lines and crisp edges seen most boldly in Bertone's Fiat X1/9.

Mulsanne's Corner: An Encapsulated History of Sports Car Racing
The car bodies were more akin to positive lift producing airplane wings and had a tendency to want to take off at high speeds.
Between 1972 and 1979 sports car racing fell into decline because of uncertain world-wide economics and frequent changes in the rules by the F.I.A. The sports cars of this time were typified by open cockpits and minimal downforce generating bodies and wings.
Utilizing the underbody shape of the race car to produce huge amounts of downforce was revolutionary and this idea has been utilized throughout motor sports, especially in the sports prototype racing series.

The car had some downforce, but since the downforce acted on a point that was right before the center of gravity, we had more downforce on the front than the rear.
The amount of downforce a car produces and the point at which that downforce acts—its center of pressure—depends on the shape of the venturi created by the car’s underbody and the track.

American dominance in international sports car racing is a transitory and rare thing, like sunspot activity or the appearance of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl.
Arguably the peak of American sports car supremacy was a brief period in the mid-to-late 1960s.
Americans may dominate international sports car racing again someday, but until that comes to pass we’re left with just memories and a handful of surviving cars.

More than any car since the seminal Lotus Seven, the Elise is a return to the company's roots–a statement of speed through light weight and engineering by subtraction.
Once snug behind the wheel, it is easy to see the corners of the car thanks to those lovely curved front tenders; crane your neck around and the flip-up tail spoiler gives a fair guide to the rear.
The ride also comes off nicely for such a light and sporting car; on the bumpy bits at Hethel the Elise deploys its power well, showing that its spring and shock rates are spot-on and its choice of footwear appropriate.

This keeps the car on the ground at high speeds and increases traction around curves because the air under the car is moving faster than the air above it.
Throughout the '50s, a typical prototype sports racing car was small and lightweight, had a front engine, and had a body with a nicely designed aerodynamic shell.
Due to relatively inefficient engines, racecar designers were relegated to building a car as aerodynamic as possible by making the body round and streamlined so that it cut through the wind to make up for any horsepower deficits.

As American car companies said back in the muscle car-crazed 1960s, "go big or go home." The same holds true today, and when compared to the Viper, the Vette will surely be homeward bound.
