Beam divergence is often stated as a critical parameter for laser performance.
Thus, beam divergence is usually stated as diffraction limited or as a multiple of the diffraction limit.
The common measurement method used to characterize a laser beam divergence is to convert the beam to the far field and to measure the far field spot size.

1936 - New Motion Picture Apparatus - SMPTE
With a beam divergence of 8 degrees in the spot lamp illustrated, it is possible to effect such a collection of direct and reflected light upon the condenser lens of only 32 degrees.
For the conditions under which spot lamps are used, it is desirable that the beam have its highest intensity at the center and that the edges be soft so as to permit overlapping the beams of several such lamps without building up high intensities in the areas overlapped.
The fact that the projected spot at all times has soft diffusing edges permitting areas to be overlapped without showing rings or bands of lights, especially adapts it to back-lighting; and the wide range of intensity within the various beams is particularly advantageous for such purposes.

Fully interconnected spot beam satellite communication system - Patent 4813036
In a spot beam satellite system, either one transponder or a group of transponders operate in conjunction with receive and transmit antenna beams that have a coverage area that is geographically distinct from the coverage areas of other receive and transmit antenna beams operating with other transponders or groups of transponders.
"Beam" is used to refer to a spot beam covering a portion of the total satellite coverage area or to a larger beam covering the same area as a number of spot beams up to and including the entire coverage area of the satellite.
The signals received from spot beam areas A and B on uplink antennas 70 and 71 are processed through receiver and frequency translator 72, the output of which is connected in parallel to fractional filters G.sub.1a through G.sub.4a.

Where the beam diameter is larger than or the same size as the feature, the sensor has sufficient resolution; where the feature is smaller than the beam diameter, the resolution is inadequate for feature detection and measurement.
Spot diameter is usually specified in the center of the working range, but the limitations of physical optics dictate that it will not remain that size throughout the working range.
One disadvantage of PSDs is that the centroid of the spot is determined by the detector.

Spot beam technology also permits reduction of ground terminal size to a point where such terminals become commercially feasible as a mass-market end-user terminal.
High-gain uplink spot beams are preferably utilized to support small low-power, low cost, end-user earth station terminals 16, while high-gain downlink spot beams are utilized to support high-data-rate transmission to the same small end-user terminals 16.
Spot beams on the broadcast polarization will be received at the satellite by a plurality of receiver subsystems 202 having a bandwidth equal to the full primary spectrum.

Since the depth of focus is proportional to the square of focal spot size, and focal spot size is directly related to f-number, the depth of focus is proportional to the square of the f-number of the focusing system.
The intensity profile of the spot is strongly dependent on the intensity profile of the radiation filling the entrance pupil of the lens.

 yet2.com - TechPak
The laser spot is automatically kept well centered at different spot sizes and the technology uses a minimal number of optical components.
The laser spot size must accordingly be adjusted to the resolution wanted.  This can be done by sending the beam through a smaller aperture, but then the energy available at the imaging surface is reduced.  Another way would be to use a zoom lens, but this lens type is complex and expensive.
Positioning of these lenses along the optical axis, determines the spot size obtained in the image plane.  A sensor detects the position of the beam spot on the image surface before and after a change of spot size.

First- and second-generation excimer lasers use a broad beam (about 6 mm in diameter) with an aperture that controls the amount of the beam that is exposed to the eye during any single pulse.
Manufacturers have refined this technology by splitting the single broad beam into several smaller beams that are rotated around the treatment area (similar to how a showerhead splits the main water stream into smaller streams).
Unlike the broad beam, the full width of the flying spot beam is exposed to the cornea during every pulse.

I made the beam spot smaller for this study so that the change in vertical position would be roughly equal to one beam diameter.
More important, it looks like the beam spot in the polarimeter line is significantly larger and more oval-shaped than the spot in the main line.
One conclusion I think I can draw is that the peak-to-peak variations in polarization measured by each scan seem roughly consistent: 12.4nm of phase shift for the polarization scan and 11nm for the asymmetry scan, which was less complete.

The question may not be whether the area is served by a spot beam, but whether it is served by the same spot beam you receive at home.
If your locals are on a spot beam, and you move out of the area served by that particular spot beam, you won't be able to receive your locals.
Some of these spot beams are located at 101, but most of the recent additions have gone on at 119.

A system for forming optical beam spots of different sizes on an imaging surface (245), includes an emitter (205) configured to emit an optical beam along a path.
The optical beam is focused at a first focus point (255) and impinges upon the imaging surface downstream of the first focus point.
With the lens at the first position the optical beam forms a beam spot of a first size on the imaging surface and with the lens at the second position the optical beam forms a beam spot of a second size, which is different than the first beam size, on the imaging surface.
