Working with Spot Color Channels | Planet Photoshop   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Spot color channels are designed to provide a channel for additional inks to be used in commercial printing.
Spot channels don't interact with layers, so adding a type layer in a spot color is out of the question.
Since the spot color is in a separate channel, it is protected while you continue editing and adjusting the rest of the image.

Spot color logos - color accuracy and economical printing
Spot color reproduction is generally more economical than that featuring a four color process logo, and as the ink colors are based on exact matching formulas, color accuracy and control are optimal.
Spot color printing usually costs less (for the simple reason that the paper requires 1/2 the number of impressions as 4 color process, and can be printed on a smaller sized press.
While it's true that spot colors are extremely accurate when it comes to traditional printing, there might be some issues when its comes to converting colors for web based use (RGB colors used in website design and Flash animations of your logo) or for four-color use in brochures and catalogs.

Process Color vs Spot Color   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Process colors are reproduced by overlapping and printing halftones to simulate a large number of colors.
Process color printing should not be confused with basic four-color printing, where overlays are cut for the colors, and sheets of halftone dots are used to create other colors and patterns.
Spot colors are printed with premixed inks on a printing press or screen printer.

For instance, a job composed of four process colors, a fifth spot color, and a varnish can be printed on a six color press or on a four-color press with a wash-up between printing the process colors and the spot colors.
One final note: Choose both spot colors and their process equivalents from a current Pantone swatch book that specifically notes both Pantone spot colors and their nearest four-color matches.
If you have a specific color you want to match and you want to limit your color palette to the four process colors to control costs, you may find that the four-color equivalent noted in your swatch book actually does come very close to the spot color you have chosen.

These are pretty universal ways to define color, no matter what the actual mechanical means of doing the printing may be (offset printing presses or screen printers, as examples).
In the simplest sense, spot color printing means that the actual color of the objects in your design (text, lines, boxes, etc.) are defined using a numeric value (a PMS value).
It is here to give you a representation of the spectrum of colors available and a way to "pre-select" colors to use before you have a chance to actually verify them.
