Spotland Bridge is a "might have been" based on the idea that the Rochdale - Bacup line took a more westerly route, leaving the Manchester - Leeds line at Castleton, desending into the Roch Valley to serve Rochdale Gasworks before striking North to climb up the Spodden Valley.
Spotland Bridge is, or rather was, a heavily industrialised area in Rochdale, with it's associated terraced housing.
The row of terraces is actually based on a row on Spotland Rd in Rochdale.

Some of the weather I encountered on the drive was appalling, reducing me to under 20 mph on the M6 at one time, but we fought our way through the storms and the usual traffic problems to arrive in the small town of Rochdale just after 1 o'clock.
Overall, Spotland is very pleasing to the eye and they may be a small club who have achieved very little success, but that has not prevented them from establishing an attractive set-up that is amongst the best in the division.
Spotland is one those places where I could return to time after time, especially if the football remains as good as was served up on this visit.

Spotland, home to Rochdale FC, was a ground that I had heard receiving so many compliments, ranging from the design of the stadium to the friendly welcome offered to all supporters.
After initial feelings of awe at the size and magnificence of some of the Premiership's biggest grounds has worn off, there is little left to capture the imagination about the venue.
Whilst Spotland hadn't quite lived up to my expectations, in the short time I had spent in the stadium, I had developed a degree of fondness for the place.

You could go along Spod Road from Spotland Bridge, down a path along the side of Meanwood House from the brow that came out near the old bridge and the swimming hole, or what we did scramble down the cliff at the end of Blair Street.
The 99 steps were at the Spotland Bridge end of Spod Road.
The other ways to get up on to Lenny Barn were via the 'White Path' a concrete path that lead up to Foot Wood at the back of the school or you scrambled up the cliff.

I've watched Dale at Spotland loads of times, i've also followed them to Macclesfield, Halifax, Huddersfield, Blackburn and as far as Plymouth.
Stood in the Sandy many a time, sat in the family stand and the boxes and was a regular in the 2000/01 season at the back of the WMG when fixtures allowed me to go to both Latics and Dale.
The fact where i've lived has always been far easier to get to BP than Spotland also plays a huge part of it.

Hello Eileen, I lived at the top of the Brow when I was a kid in the 40's/50's and I don't remember a pub on the Brow.
For your info, Spotland Bridge is an area where five roads meet; Spotland Rd, Rooley Moor Rd, Edenfield Rd, Mellor St and Bridgefold Rd. How was that for a memory test.
There was in fact at least four pubs on the area of Spotland Road to which he refers and there still are at least two to my knowledge - however - you would need to go back to the old history of the area which I believe might be available through 'Touchstones' in the Library.
