Harry Nilsson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nilsson was born in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, New York in 1941.
Nilsson's next album, Harry (1969), was his first to hit the charts, and also provided a Top 40 single with "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City" (interestingly, this song was written as a contender for the theme for Midnight Cowboy).
Nilsson was profoundly affected by the murder of John Lennon in December 1980.

Nilsson said it is a move orchestrated by a small group of members who want him removed.
Nilsson acknowledges what he calls "financial concerns" facing the local, but believes the dispute over his pay is motivated more by a desire to remove him from office than to solve the local's money troubles.
Nilsson understands the move to cut his pay, but believes it is only one way the local can reduce its costs.

Nilsson is one of several players who are the sons of former NHL players -- his father, Kent Nilsson, was a star with the Calgary Flames.
Kent Nilsson was arguably the most talented player to ever don the Flaming C and he continues to own several franchise records more than 17 years after he played his last game for the club.

Nilsson, essentially the same in I and II, is vocally the most thrilling.
Although she is less steady than Nilsson or Sutherland, with a wobble when she sings loudly, she has all the notes, and she projects them well.
Tebaldi (Nilsson I) is perhaps preeminent because of the sheer beauty of her voice and the excellent vocal delivery.

That's the question posed by Harry Nilsson's 1971 pop parable of a well-rounded young boy named Oblio, from the Land of Point, who's cast apart from the community by those who resent his pointlessness.
For a time the two do quite well, but after a jealous child, son of a count, complained that Oblio had no point, there was a game to see whether Oblio had the ability to compete.
I always enjoyed Harry Nilsson's music (funny, since I was only a toddler when his major hits came out!), but I never heard of The Point until I found out about the London stage production on a Monkees fansite (Davy Jones was Oblio and Micky Dolenz was the Count's kid and the Leafman).

Some folks (even Nilsson fans) may prefer other versions of 16 tons, probably because those versions have more of a twang, a more "Country" approach.
Harry sang all sorts of styles, but I don't think he ever really "did country." Of course "Joy" is a parody of a country song, but it's not the same thing.
There is a lot of tasty stuff here, and it prefigures his amazing cover of "Early in the Morning" on Nilsson Schmilsson.

Harry Nilsson was one of those talent singer-songwriters, like Randy Newman (whose "Caroline" he covers on this album), whose reputation exceeds their popularity.
This is a fine collection of Nilsson songs, although it would have been nice to hear some of his other songs that were successfully covered such as "Ten Little Indians" (The Yardbirds) and "Cuddly Toy" (The Monkees).
Nilsson was fabulous and is so under-appreciated today, though I can't figure out why.

Rob Nilsson directed and stars in this provocative drama as Mel Hurley, an obsessive photojournalist who returns home to San Francisco with intense suspicions about the activities of his girlfriend, dancer Carmen (Consuelo Faust).
She hasn't come to meet him, he thinks she's having an affair with her partner (Russell Murphy), and in his pained reverie, he is soon flashing back to another scene of horrific loss: Biafra, where, years before, he tried in vain to draw attention to suffering.
Nilsson dedicated an earlier indie effort, Signal 7 (1983), to director John Cassavetes, whose work Nilsson's resembles in its passion and humanity.

Expertly produced and remastered by Rob Santos and Sundazed Records’ honcho Bob Irwin, both BMG Spoonful reissues go to great lengths to capture the pop enthusiasm the group brought to Top 40 radio during the heyday of ‘60s Beatlemania.
Spanning Nilsson’s heyday, 1967-73, the 21 track single CD features all the big hits (“Everybody’s Talkin’”, “Jump Into The Fire”, “Spaceman”) with new liner notes and track data and legendary appearances from pop icons such as John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Peter Frampton, Caleb Quaye and Chris Spedding.
Featuring blues guitar great Kim Simmonds, the Savoy Brown Millennium Collection spotlights tracks from a number of their early albums up to and including their ‘71 classic Street Corner Talking, while good liner notes retrace the group’s illustrious history.

San Diego rockers Sprung Monkey haven't been heard from since releasing 1998's underrated "Mr.
Funny Face," but the band's AWOL stint is forgiven on first listen to the new "Get A Taste" (Surfdog/Redline).
One of the more melodic and intelligent punk-pop acts, Sprung Monkey also has a willingness to reach beyond its genre - which explains the album's closer, a trippy retooling of Harry Nilsson's early '70s kitsch-hit "Coconut."

At their core, a hard rocking duo who sound equally inspired by the likes of pop icon Harry Nilsson, “Satisfaction”-era Stones mixed in with an alternative dose of pre-Arthur era Burt Bacharach and the orch-pop flair of Pet Sounds.
Described by the duo as “a jukebox inside a fortune cookie,” their 2005 CD American Blood is right among the best of their recent pop releases.
The thirteen track Phanta Morgana is infused the great pop spirit of the early ‘70s and the entire CD spotlights top musicianship of Dixon and his musical cohort, guitarist Craig Bartock, who worked so well with Heart on their 2004 CD.
