To determine magnification, divide the focal length of the spotting scope by the focal length of the eyepiece.
The ratio of the focal length of the spotting scope to the diameter (aperture) of its objective lens, in millimeters.
The diameter, in millimeters, of the beam of light that leaves the eyepiece of the spotting scope is the "exit pupil".

 birding.com - Scope Buying Guide
A spotting scope is a compact telescope designed primarily for terrestrial observing and is used in applications which require magnifications beyond the range of a typical binocular.
Spotting scopes are ideally suited for such activities as long distance birdwatching and nature study (shorebirds and raptors, for example), telephotography, scenic observing, long distance microscopy, beginning astronomy and surveillance.
The magnification of a spotting scope is actually a relationship of two independent optical systems-- the objective lens and the ocular (eyepiece). It is calculated by dividing the focal length of the objective lens by the focal length of the eyepiece and for most nature observing, 20 to 40X is quite adequate.

Spotting Scopes - Orion Telecopes & Binoculars
Orion Spotting Scopes are telescopes that were designed primarily for terrestrial viewing.Considerably shorter and lighter than their astronomically dedicated cousins, spotting scopes with apertures between 50mm and 127mm (2 to 5 inches) are excellent for increasing our pleasure in any number of hobbies and research projects.
A spotting scope set at 20-power would allow you to stand 50 feet from the nest and yet enjoy a view as if you were only 2 1/2 feet away - virtually close enough to touch it!
Spotting scopes come in a variety of configurations, typically: Schmidt-Cassegrains and Maksutov-Cassegrains, in which mirrors are used to fold the light back on itself making the instrument more portable and convenient to use, and the more common refracting type.

The advantages of the spotting scope over binoculars
The spotting scope is a compact telescope designed largely for terrestrial observing and is used in applications that involve magnifications beyond the range of a typical binocular.
Spotting scopes are perfectly suited for activities like long distance bird watching and nature study, telephotography, hunting, scenic observing, long distance microscopy, beginning astronomy and surveillance.
Equipped with spotting scopes, you can spot a movement on the ground or air, from even as far as 200-300 yards away, and capture that mysterious bird in your scope, before it flies away, never to be seen for a long time.

BirdCentral.com - spotting scopes and spotting scope
Spotting scopes are telescopes configured for terrestrial viewing by using additional lenses to produce an upright image.
The magnification range of most spotting scopes is in the 15x to 75x range and are designed to be used on a stable mount such as a tripod.
Most spotting scopes also have a 60mm objective lens or larger to collect more light to compensate for the loss of light at higher magnifications.

The Hermes 1 Spotting scope - Part I
Spotting scopes are often one of the most overlooked and under-researched pieces of gear available to the shooter.
Without a spotting scope you may never close in, visually, on that binocular target that may just be what you were looking for.
A spotting scope is not only a must for calling long range shots, it can save you an immense amount of work, allowing you to get "close" to a target without ever having to leave the hide or move up to a dangerous physical distance to I.D. something.

Bearman's Spotting Scopes And Binoculars--What I Like And Why
Which scope is best for you would depend on how much you can afford to spend.
This is especially handy when your tracking a fast moving animal like a wolf, bear, or flying eagle in the wild, and once the animal being followed stops, you don't have to lock the head in place to keep it in place.

 Choosing the Right Spotting Scope
While binoculars are fine for general birding and sightseeing, a spotting scope is essential for viewing very distant subjects, or getting in tighter to study intricate details.
When choosing a spotting scope, quality optics are the main consideration.
For example, if you hike to your scenic spots, you¯ll want a compact spotter that fits in a day pack and weighs a pound or two at the most.

Laura's Optics Guide: Selecting a Spotting Scope for Birding
Spotting scopes are also the instrument of choice when “digiscoping”— holding or securing a digital camera to the lens of optical viewing equipment to get a close-up photo of a distant bird.
You can view stars with a typical spotting scope (though you won’t see as many as you could through an astronomical telescope), but you can’t view birds with a typical astronomical telescope, which simply is not designed to have the light gathering ability or the field of view necessary for finding and viewing birds.
Especially with lower and mid-price spotting scopes, where otical compromises are made to keep them affordable, this is usually wiser than getting a zoom eyepiece.

 Birding Scopes
For example, a spotting scope with a 640mm objective lens and a 32mm eyepiece would be a 20 power scope (640 ÷ 32 = 20).
When these scopes are used on a window mount in a car, you don't have to twist your body so far as you would with a straight-through scope.
Although the average 60mm scope is fine in the 15 to 40 power range, it simply can't work as well as an 80mm in dim light or under high magnification.

Also, a 35mm camera body can be attached to all our spotting scopes for telephotography (with a T adapter).
