A letter to the editor by British government health researchers in this week's issue of The Lancet notes that of 110 cases of salmonella infection found in cats, 40 were types that are resistant to commonly used antibiotics.
"The finding that cats are infected with a strain of salmonella commonly responsible for food poisoning in human beings raises the question as to whether cats play a part in the spread of this strain," writes Dr. Patrick G. Wall and his colleagues from the Public Health Laboratory Service Communicable Disease Surveillance Center in London.
The researchers explain that cats may pick up the infection from their food (which is often left out for long periods) and possibly from eating scraps of contaminated human food.
