Perhaps the most important development has been that of the Sprechstimme (German for “speech voice”), or Sprechgesang (speech song), introduced by German composer Arnold Schoenberg, in which a new variety of voice production, midway between speaking and singing, is used by the performer.
The sprechstimme is well illustrated in the vocal line of Schoenberg's series of songs collectively titled Pierrot Lunaire (1912).
Other new developments in the composition of art songs are the creation, by such composers as Russian pianist Sergey Rachmaninoff, of vocal melodies called vocalises, which are set to a series of vowels rather than to the words of a text; and the revival, by a few composers, of unaccompanied songs.

Byron, The Test Pressings of Schoenberg Conducting Pierrot lunaire
Sprechstimme in Pierrot lunaire has an in-built demand for interpretation by the performer; and when this is denied by performers, Schoenberg saw it as a misinterpretation of his music.
In Moses und Aron he points to the fact that Sprechstimme is beyond the twelve tones, and that the singer should extract from the notation the expression (as opposed to singing the exact pitches).
This, and the fact that places that collide with the score are consistent, suggests that she was working consciously or unconsciously with a performative contour that does not correspond to or deviate entirely from that of the score.

The text is loosely derived of the myth of Ariadne(which is also represented in "Ariadne's thread" by Lou Harrison), and was written mere hours after learning of the composer's death.
The vocal part, which is applicable for all voice types though designated for mezzo, requires some facility in leaps of ninths and larger and a small amount of sprechstimme.
The premiere performance at the University of Akron was held in the fall of 2003, and was performed by the composer (mezzo) and Joyce Elliott, violin.

In this mixture of speech and song, the words are declaimed in precisely defined rhythms, but on pitches that are approximated rather than precisely sung.
It has become traditional that this Sprechstimme role be performed by an esteemed older singer.

Frank's vocals are essentially the same as always, but the musical accompianment is not your typical "sprechstimme" accompianment.
Barrow is locked into a rather simple, tick-tock type groove, while Mars randomly inserts keyboard chords and riffs (though not in the same way they would during the "normal" "Dangerous Kitchen" workout).
Personally, I think this version is musically more interesting than the "sprechstimme" version, but then again, I'm not a really big fan of this facet of Frank's music.

It's evidently imperative with sprechstimme to hear the piece in a language you understand, and it's hard to find recordings of the english version.
sprechstimme is something i wish was used a lot more in all sorts of music (sprechstimme aprox.= speech-melody, 'spoken with an actors nuance yet in various pitches'), but only in english (and i guess for non-english speakers, preferable in their most instantly meaningful tongue)

Century would not likely have imagined: sprechstimme, ululation, nasal humming, the rolling of consonants and attenuation of vowels, falsetto, choral whispering, and declamatory speech.
A whirling piano obligato accompanies at times these cantilevering fragments, intensifying as, towards the conclusion, a "multi-voice texture of shifting eight-part harmony is heard, leading to a transposed version of Wachet Auf," according to Lewis.
Here the many disparate elements are united, chorale harmony, Sprechstimme, and speech alike, before subsiding into a whisper.

The "sprechstimme" is realized better than the De Gaetani recording, obviously better than the '78 Boulez recording (here the reciter sing, and the Pierrot sould absolutely not be sung) and much better than the 1997 recording with Christine Schafer, who sing and often...
