The Bureau of Justice Statistics defines a spree killing as "killings at two or more locations with almost no time break between murders." Serial killers are different in that they have cooling off periods between attacks, while mass murderers typically stick to one location.
Thomas Hamilton Thomas Hamilton (1952-1996), Scottish spree killer at Dunblane, Scotland was 43 years old when he committed the Dunblane massacre, the spree killing of 16 small children and a teacher in a primary school, and subsequently committing suicide.
Spree killers, on the other hand, do not have a cooling off period and are in a state of constant hunting until they are caught or killed, even though their murder spree may sometimes extend to a period of several months.
