That is the shocking message from Springwatch, the biggest ever survey into the arrival of spring, run by the BBC and the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity.
Early reports indicate that the ‘stop-start spring’, with major fluctuations in temperature, has resulted in widespread sightings of frozen frog spawn and there are concerns that, despite new reports of active nests throughout the winter, some bumblebees may have been killed off.
Springwatch with Bill Oddie is broadcast on BBC TWO on 25 March from 19.00 — 20.00 (with a repeat on 27 March.

These sightings are among the first recordings to the Springwatch survey, run by the BBC in association with the Woodland Trust and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, to assess how nature responds to climate change.
But weathermen continue to predict Britain will be caught in the grip of a cold snap before the end of the winter, prompting phenology project manager Jill Attenborough to urge more volunteers to add their reports to the 200,000 sightings recorded every year.

 Springwatch Sketches
With all those loose ends tied up I enjoy the indulgence of watching BBC television's live Springwatch show hosted by Bill Oddie and Kate Humble who are based at a wildlife-friendly organic dairy farm in Devon while Simon King roves about, this week to the Farne Islands.
Springwatch by contrast emphasises that the smallest things we do - making a compost heap, putting out a bird feeder, providing a nestbox - can make a difference for our local wildlife.
The Devon farm's resident blue tits, robins, badgers, dabchicks, barn owls, buzzards and swallows are given enough air time to establish themselves as individuals with their own quirks, likes and dislikes.
