 I, Cringely . The Pulpit . Sprint Nextel's Hidden Advantage | PBS
Sprint recast the service as fixed-wireless Internet, but the same problems remained and eventually that service, too, was shut down with Sprint taking a large loss.
Reason number one, then, why Sprint Nextel's WiMax service is different from its competitors is that the company already owns the frequencies, so the effective cost of acquiring them is nothing.
While Sprint Nextel is talking about WiMax as a mobile service, there is no reason why they can't also compete for fixed wireless customers.

Light Reading - Sprint Hints at Spectrum Plans - Telecom News Analysis
WASHINGTON -- Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S - message board) plans to acquire additional spectrum in the 2.5GHz band in order to give the company a nationwide footprint, according to company officials attending the Wireless Communications Association International (WCA) conference here this week.
As a condition of approving the recent merger between Sprint and Nextel, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has required the merged company to begin offering services in the 2.5GHz band to at least 15 million Americans by 2009 and to 15 million more by 2011, or risk losing rights to the spectrum.
Sprint says it will beat the deadline, and that the services in the band, whatever they may be, will serve far more than the required 30 million potential customers.

Since Sprint Nextel is one of the few national wireless carriers here in the U.S. without prepaid calling plans, it seemed to us that 2007 might have become the year that the CDMA carrier wised up and offered wireless service to those with suboptimal credit -- or those who are not liking long-term contracts.
With Sprint Nextel committed to WiMax for its 4G plans and Nokia shaking hands with Sprint Nextel on that turf, maybe Nokia and Qualcomm are close to shaking hands in some form after years of issues that left Nokia holding an expensive but worthless 1xRTT bag of, well, nothing.
Sprint has apparently gotten a few of its disparate Mobile WiMax partners to play nice with each other at least for a little while, with Samsung, Intel, Motorola, and Nokia all sharing a booth at this week's 3GSM conference to help spread the WiMax word.

Sprint would get access to Nextel’s 15.3 million subscribers, many of whom are business customers, and Nextel would avoid a costly upgrade of its own network.
Nextel agreed last month to move its network to a more expensive band of broadcast spectrum because of fears of interference between its phones and emergency response radios.
Under terms of the deal, Sprint shareholders would get one share of the new company for each Sprint share while Nextel shareholders would get the equivalent of 1.3 Sprint Nextel shares for each of their shares, a small amount of that sum paid in cash.
