Cycling sprinter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A cycling sprinter is a road bicycle racer or track racer who can finish a race very explosively by accelerating, sometimes using the slipstream of another cyclist or group of cyclists tactically to gain greater momentum.
Road cycling sprinters tend to have a larger build than the average road racing cyclist, combining the strength of their legs with their upper body to produce a short burst of speed necessary in a closely-contested finish.
It is therefore not uncommon for sprinters to be dropped by the peloton (also known as the 'bunch' or 'pack') if a race is through hilly terrain.

Running - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The faster the running, the more energy has to be dissipated through compensating motions throughout the entire body.
This is why elite sprinters have powerful upper body physiques.
As the competitive distance increases, there is a rapid drop in the upper body and overall muscle mass typically exhibited by the people who compete at a high level in each respective event.

A Cybex dynamometer was employed to measure the isokinetic peak torque of knee extension at 80o/sec, 120o/sec, 180o/sec, 240o/sec and 300o/sec.
The sprinters (stature 1.72 ± 0.06m, body mass 62.6 ± 4.8 kg) were athletics team members, who trained to compete in races of up to 400 metres in track and field events.
Since, on the average, sprinters tend to have greater percentage of type II fibres which have a greater cross sectional area than type I, the sprinters have a greater quadriceps cross sectional area than distance runners (Fox et al., 1989).

Of course, many sprinters work hard....but they don't spend as much time out there on the track - usually spend more time than distance runners in the weight room, so they are seen as much by the distance guys....
Plus, there are some lazy sprinters out there who can succeed with their natural talent alone....which you can't do in distance running....if you don't put in the work, you can't expect to be good.
So maybe the reason why distance runners disrespect sprinters is because they are jealous of their talent.

Greek sprinters cleared of doping charges. 19/03/2005. ABC News Online
The Greek Athletics Federation has cleared sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou of missing doping tests, saying it is convinced they are not guilty of accusations levelled by athletics' world governing body.
But the sprinters consistently denied they were at fault and responsible for the Olympic movement's biggest athletics scandal since 100 metres gold medallist Ben Johnson tested positive for drugs at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
The sprinters also still have to face a trial on charges brought separately by Greek prosecutors of missing the drug tests and faking a motorcycle accident to avoid testing in the Athens Games case.

sprinters muscle composition | distance runners muscle composition
We have known for some time that sprinters have a higher relative proportion of fast twitch muscle fibres, capable of contracting faster and producing higher forces, so giving a performance advantage in sprint events.
But until now no study has established whether sprinters' muscles have a different architecture from those of distance runners, particularly in relation to the length of muscle fibres and the muscles' angle of attachment to connective tissue (the 'pennation angle').
In this study, 23 sprinters with 100m personal bests of 10.0-10.9 seconds were compared with 24 distance runners with 5km PBs of 13.5-14.5 minutes, and 24 non-athletic controls.
