Sprites could be just about anything that moves on the screen like the hero in your favorite game, missles, enimies, etc. Luckily the C64 has 8 hardware sprites and that is where the main focus of this article will be.
The size of a sprite on the c64 is 24*21 (24 dots wide by 21 tall) which is 3 bytes wide and 21 bytes tall notice this equal 63 bytes.
Sprite 0 will be displayed in front of sprite 1, sprite 1 will be displayed in from of sprite 2, etc. So the lower numbered sprite will always be displayed in front of the higher numbered sprite as this feature is fixed and can not be changed.

The structure of the graphics is basically as in multicolor bitmap mode, but the bits 9 and 10 of the g-addresses are always zero due to the set ECM bit, with the same results as in the first invalid bitmap mode.
If the sprite display for a sprite is turned on, the shift register is shifted left by one bit with every pixel as soon as the current X coordinate of the raster beam matches the X coordinate of the sprite (even registers $d000-$d00e), and the bits that "fall off" are displayed.
A collision of sprites and other graphics data is detected as soon as one or more sprite data sequencers output a non-transparent pixel and the graphics data sequencer outputs a foreground pixel in the course of display generation.

 Sprite (MID Profile)
Sprites can be implemented using whatever techniques a manufacturers wishes to use (e.g hardware acceleration may be used for all Sprites, for certain sizes of Sprites, or not at all).
The Sprite's upper left corner is rendered at the Sprite's current position relative to the origin of the Graphics object.
That is, an opaque pixel in the first Sprite would have to collide with an opaque pixel in the second Sprite for a collision to be detected.

They are the little graphics representing players, enemies, and physical objects, capable of moving around a scene and animating themselves to reflect current activity.

Sprite (computer graphics)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Sprites were originally invented as a method of quickly compositing several images together in two-dimensional video games using special hardware.
For each frame the sprites are first bit blited (short for "bit block transfer") into the fast, large, double, and costly frame buffer and then the frame buffer is sent to the screen.
Software sprites were used to refer to subroutines that used bit blitting to accomplish the same goal on systems such as the Atari ST and the Apple II whose graphics hardware had no sprite capability.
