"SPROTBROUGH, a parish in the N. division of Strafforth wapentake, West Riding county York, 2½ miles N.W. of Doncaster, and 1 mile from the Sprotbrough station of the South Yorkshire railway.
The parish, which is situated on the river Don, contains the townships of Sprotbrough and Cadeby, and the hamlets of Cusworth, Newton, and Doncaster Bridge.

Elizabeth Mary Copley was born on 11 April 1800, the daughter of Sir Joseph Copley Bart.
Sprotbrough Hall stands on a limestone ridge overlooking the River Don, near Doncaster.
It was built in the late seventeenth century by Sir Godfrey Copley and contained a large library and a valuable collection of paintings.

In the Church, are several monuments of the Fitzwilliams and Copleys, who have been Lords of Sprotbrough for centuries.
Sprotbrough Hall was built by Sir Godfrey Copley, who was created a Baronet by King Charles II.
It presents a handsome elevation of stone, in the style of that period, exhibiting a degree of magnificence, not seen in modern houses.

There is quite a large amount of heraldry in Sprotbrough church covering the Copley and Fitzwilliam families and a booklet has been produced by Pamela Lindley (john.lindley@ntlworld.com) and is available at the Doncaster archives and at the church archives.

He spent his teenage years in the rambling rectory in the south Yorkshire village of Sprotbrough, near Doncaster, and, it turns out, his early days were just as rumbustious as his time as one of The Few and as a truculent prisoner of war in the notorious Colditz Castle.
Bader left school to join the RAF in 1928, but still visited Sprotbrough, once by air when Mr Dent was in the rectory garden.

Cadeby residents were mainly farmers and quarriers; magnesian limestone used not only burnt (via kilns sited within the village) on the soil but also as stone for building.
The population was so small that locals walked the short distance to Sprotbrough to worship as the Sprotbrough Estate had it's own Hall and church.
