This stop on the tour was in an extremely dusty area, but the camp was very pleasant with comfortable tents/beds and good food/wine and the full compliment of cocktails.
Because of the rains, the shooting for yellow-throated sandgrouse -- the largest of the sandgrouse species -- was poor as the birds no longer concentrated at their traditional watering hole.
We did enjoy very good guinea and spurfowl shooting, though even some of those birds had dispersed and initially proved challenging for the beaters.

Kenya: There are 2 subspecies; cranchii (pictured above) found in the Lake Victoria Basin and Mara GR and leucoparaeus found locally in the coastal lowlands.

It is active early and late in the day and is found in pairs or small groups.

The 2004/2005 southern African rainy season (Nov-March) during which our guineafowl, spurfowl and francolin breed, is now almost over and the first sightings of young birds have been reported from several of our estates in South Africa and Zambia.
The spurfowl and francolin, on the other hand, have done rather well out of the late rains and show promise for further good numbers of chicks appearing in the months ahead.
Our 3 species of sandgrouse are scattered about all over the sub continent at this time (which is actually where they should be!), with just the Spotted (Burchell’s) Sandgrouse putting in an early (for them) breeding in January.

Although I have traveled a fair bit in Asia and Africa, my personal encounters with members of this family are pitifully few: just 7 pheasants (just 9%) and 25 partridges (24%).
Most of the latter are African francolins like this Yellow-necked Spurfowl (left), shown here with a half-grown chick.
Also included in the partridge subfamily are Old World quail, snowcocks, and spurfowl.
