 Korabl-Sputnik
Korabl-Sputnik (K-S) 1-5 were known in the west as Sputnik 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10.
(Sputnik 7 and 8 were launched as Venus probes, the latter also known as Venera 1.
Although a number of dogs traveled aboard these Vostok precursors, the first dog in space was Laika, who rode aboard Sputnik 2 but died in orbit.

 Russian Space Dogs
Mushka was one of the three dogs trained for Sputnik 2 and was used during ground tests.
She did not fly on Sputnik 2 because she refused to eat properly.
Zvezdochka ("Little Star"), who was named by Yuri Gagarin, made one orbit on board Sputnik 10 on March 25, 1961 with a wooden cosmonaut dummy in the final practise flight before Gagarin's historic flight on April 12.
