 DVD Review: Spy Kids
"Spy Kids" starts off introducing us to Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez(Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) two former spies (now "consultants") who were from different sides, but fell in love, got married and had two kids.
Meanwhile, at the Floop palace, assistant Minion (Tony Shalhoub in an excellent performance) has come up with "spy kids"; robot children that are planned to take over the world, but they need one last component that the two children have in their possession.
At their disposal though, are the latest in spy gadgets - all of these are effective, but none of them - like the rest of the movie - are really violent in nature.

 Movie-List - Reviews - Spy Kids
The kids learn that their parents are spies when an evil toy manufacturer and television personality captures their parents.
Gregorio Cortez and Ingrid Cortez (not her maiden name) were spies who spent a great deal of their time trying to hunt the other down, but through all of their chasing they begin to fall for eachother and one day they were wed.
Apparently several OSS (the spy organization to which the Cortezes belong) agents have gone missing and it is their task to find them.

The Trades - Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams
Take the elements of a successful spy film, like an evil doer hell bent on taking over the world, a spy who is actually a traitor, and throw in lots of cool gadgets and transportation that is given to intelligent kids to use.
Kids will most likely enjoy the film, and the gadgets are fun to watch, but adults won't have as much fun as they did at the first film.
When "Spy Kids" opened in March of 2001 and went on to bring in a surprising $112 Million in domestic box office, "Spy Kids 2" was already in the works.

Filmtracks: Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (Robert Rodriguez/John Debney)
Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams: (Robert Rodriguez/John Debney) With the Spy Kids franchise being the sole dream of director and producer Robert Rodriguez, it is no surprise that Rodriguez would fill some of the composing duties for the franchise himself.
The Spy Kids films are aimed at the fantasies of kids, and thus the score plays to several cliches in action and thriller music that appeal to kids.
The first Spy Kids score may have been a funky adventure given the broad collection of talent, and Spy Kids 2 is more of a stock action/adventure score that one would expect from John Debney, with the unpredictable elements thrown in by Rodriguez.

"Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams" - Salon
His 2001 "Spy Kids" was ostensibly made for children, but it had more stylishness (not to mention a better plot and cooler gadgetry) than any James Bond movie made in the past 10 years.
In "Spy Kids 2," the well-respected kid-spies Carmen Cortez (Alexa Vega) and her younger brother Juni (Daryl Sabara) find themselves challenged by a pair of uppity blond rivals: Gary Giggles (Matt O'Leary) and his little wiseacre sister Gerti (Emily Osment).
The secret of Rodriguez's success with the "Spy Kids" movies is that he makes you care as much about the characters as he does about the special effects.

Modamag.com | Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (Movie Review)
With the “Odorama” featured in “Rugrats Go Wild,” and now the return of 3-D in “Spy Kids 3-D,” the gimmicky nature of recent family filmmaking makes it feel like it was the 1950s all over again.
“Spy Kids” was a dream come true: an inventive family film that never talked down to its audience, and wasn’t weighed down by principles.
“Spy Kids 2” couldn’t match the original’s tone nor restraint, with Rodriguez falling far too much in love with the special effects he found so easy to control in the first film.

Spy Kids 2 (2002). A Hollywood Jesus Movie Review
Their spy gadgets don’t work on the mysterious island, and the Cortez kids have to deal with their rival OSS Spy Kid agents, sneaky Gary and Gerti Giggles.
SPY KIDS 2: THE ISLAND OF LOST DREAMS is Rodriguez’s ode to the very spirit of exploration, as his young spies set sail in a super-automated Dragon Spy Sub for lands unknown bringing along enough spy paraphernalia – from satellite-linked watches to rocket-powered hover-shoes -- to make James Bond’s Q green with envy.
The kids are placed on the island where their technology does not work so that they need to rely on their own creativity to survive.

Spy Kids 2 is sluggish in spots, and there's just no recapturing the first film's invigorating sense of originality, but it's still a unique theatrical experience well worth any family's precious moviegoing dollars.

 Spy Kids (2001)
Spy Kids is full of cartoony action sequences and scenes of comic menace that should present no problem to any but the youngest viewers; parents of a typical seven- or eight-year-old won’t have anything to worry about.
Both kids are likeable and sympathetic, though older Carmen is the more competent and picks on her brother constantly, while younger Juni has more pratfalls and needs rescuing every so often.
Spy Kids is from director Robert Rodriguez —; who’s known for crime thrillers El Mariachi and Desperado, as well as horror schlock From Dusk Till Dawn and The Faculty —; and distributor Dimension (a Miramax division), also more commonly associated with R-rated, ultraviolent movies.

For Spy Kids, you can picture these people walking into the studio, mucking around for a while, spontaneously conjuring up a minute of ideas, testing out these ideas like a group of giddy teenagers with new band equipment in the garage, and then going to lunch.
In any case, the frenetic score for Spy Kids gives the listener the impression that the group of composers had a lot of effortless fun working together on the project.

JoBlo reviews the movie "Spy Kids"
When their international spy parents are kidnapped by the evil Floopster, two children are left to take over the spy game for their family and rescue the day.
And considering that I am neither a kid, a mom or a pop, I even dug the movie a lot, so I can't imagine this flick not hitting the right chords with anyone looking to have a good time at the movies (which is probably why Miramax has already green-lit the sequel).
This concept of kids who automatically become spies, with Matrix-like powers and agility when they realize that their parents are spies, is just stupid.

This is no lazy sequel: with the return of the cast from the original Spy Kids, plus Holland Taylor and Ricardo Montalban as the grandparents, this winning script has punch, as well as amazing digital effects.
The spy ships, personal helicopters, flying shoes and crazy laptops are a fun distraction, and the high-tech tree house is pure fantasy.

Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams : filmcritic.com Movie Review
Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams stands as Rodriguez’s biggest disappointment in his sporadic career, a homogenous and formulaic attempt in continuing the exploits of master spy kids Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni (Daryl Sabara) Cortez in their pursuit of truth and justice before bedtime.
This time around, Carmen and Juni are in competition with a rival Spy Kids duo of Gary Giggles (Matthew O’Leary) and his sister Gerti (Emily Osment, sister of Haley Joel) for top assignments and duties.
Coupled with a distracting subplot of rival Spy Kids and their megalomaniac father figure Donnagon (Mike Judge), Rodriguez fails to generate any difficult challenge for Carmen and Juni to face.

Rodriguez obviously had a blast making "Spy Kids," from the quirky casting to the earthy set designs to the special effects, which include skeletons in a sword fight.

 Spy Kids 3 D
Spy Kids 3-D is loud and headache inducing...little more than a heartless product for the video game generation.
Undemanding kids may like it, but the only thing this one has to offer is the novelty being in 3-D. It also confirms why so few 3-D films are ever made: the technology hasn’t changed much since the 50s, and it still basically sucks.
That’s what watching Spy Kids 3-D is like, only your turn never comes, just like the game junkies in arcades who can play a game for hours with only one quarter.

Spy Kids is created in much the same spirit as these pervious Rodriguez films, except that it stars a bunch of kids who don't become chopped into tiny pieces of flesh and there aren't any half-naked women flashing their breasts at the screen.

3BlackChicks Review™... SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER (Bams)
Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) decided he no longer wanted to be a Spy Kid; he hung up his OCC ID and went into business for himself as a small-time gumshoe.
The beauty of Spy Kids 2, for me, was in its unassuming wit and charm, in the way it reflected creator Robert Rodriguez's vision without that stereotypes, and that it celebrated real, honest-to-goodness family values [no, not the ones in those empty slogans touted by political pimps on the Left and the Right.
Spy Kids 3-D, on the other hand, seemed less interested in its story and more interested in the techie stuff.

Rodriguez has made a movie for kids, and the most and least that can be said about it is that parents, while hardly being catered to, will experience profound relief that the movie knows how to entertain and does so.
As a piece of almost dadaist filmmaking, Spy Kids is great fun with its continual spirit of invention.
It simultaneuosly brings to life the kinds of things lurking in the overactive imaginations while poking fun at the way kids are drawn into mind rotting escapism such as Floop's TV show.
