Spy film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many novels in the spy fiction genre have been adapted as films, although in many cases (such as James Bond) the overall tone is changed.
The peak of popularity of the spy film is often considered to be the 1960s when Cold War fears meshed with a desire by audiences to see exciting and suspenseful films.
Spy films also enjoyed something of a revival in the late 1990s, although these were often action films with espionage elements, or comedies like Austin Powers.

The Spy Kids movies are about the children of a married spy couple who become involved in their parents' espionage.
Director Robert Rodriguez says the first film was the "Willy Wonka and James Bond mix" and the second was the "Mysterious Island and James Bond mix"; by this pattern the third film could be described as the "Tron and James Bond mix".
The third film was also used as a test for a special Texas Instruments digital projector which is supposed to be able to project polorized 3D, a process that does not require the red-blue lenses.

Filmed in seven countries, including Hungary, Italy, and France, the attention to detail gave the film's series of settings a level of realism unneeded in other blockbusters where explosions and allegedly witty dialogue are the point.

Spy Game (2001) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
As a spy adventure film, intrigue and excitement seem to be a necessity and this film has both essentials in spades.
For much of the film, CIA veteran "Nathan Muir," played by Robert Redford, speaks to a group of CIA investigators about his teaching of "Tom Bishop," Brad Pitt’s character, a man who recently led an unauthorized raid into an Asian prison and his now scheduled to be executed for being a spy.
The action is intense from the first scene, much to the film’s benefit, because the running time of two hours plus might have seemed too long if the energy and intensity of the film was ever less than it was.

This is an action, not an actors' film, but this doesn't stop the principles from giving a human face to their characters.
Cinematographer Dan Mindel does a fine job capturing the ever-changing scenes as the action moves from the war-room atmosphere of CIA headquarters to the greenish tinting of the Vietnam locale, the rooftops and dark streets of Berlin (with Budapest standing in for the German capital) and war-torn Beirut (utilizing Casablanca for the Lebanese city).

Dimension Films pulled off a suprise victory this weekend as their latest installment of the Spy Kids franchise, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, overtook all other new wide releases this weekend to capture the top spot at the box office.
The numbers generated from the first two openings of the Spy Kids films seemed to indicate that interest was slipping.
Should the estimates for the weekend hold true, it would be the first time in history that five films have cracked the $20 million mark; a stat that helps push the national box office for the week of July 24th past the comparable frame from last year by 25%.

“Spy Kids” was a dream come true: an inventive family film that never talked down to its audience, and wasn’t weighed down by principles.

It portrays the business of spy work in a realistic way: It is a deceptive, dangerous job that is neither good, nor bad, but simply what is in the best interests of the country.
Spy Game shows you what is really means to be an agent in service to your country — and it ain’t that glamorous.
If the box office is any indication, this film apparently didn’t pull in the numbers they probably expected, however, that has nothing to do with the quality.

 Film Quips | SPY KIDS
Spy Kids, written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, The Faculty), is full of action and beautifully eye-catching effects, but it's also refreshingly well-written and intelligent for a film aimed at the pre-teen market.
But their lackluster deliveries do not seriously hamper the film's overall effect, as there is enough heft to Rodriguez's script, not to mention cool gadgetry and colorful scenery, to keep the interest level high.
There are some rather dark aspects to the story, and younger children might be nonplussed by its occasionally nightmarish imagery, but as the final reel winds down we get the traditional message about those pure of heart succeeding in the end, including former villains who finally see the light.

Spy Kids Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
The spy genre has grown rather tiresome in recent years, with each entry into the James Bond film series (such as "The World is Not Enough") sinking the venerable franchise further into banality.
And despite Rodriguez's association with blood-and-guts action films such as "Desperado" and "From Dusk Till Dawn", he successfully manages to both invigorate the ailing genre with some new ideas, as well as allows this critic to use the words 'kick-ass' and 'family film' in the same sentence and mean it.
The only problem is that the robots, dubbed 'spy kids', are not yet able to pass as real children due to a lack of brainpower-- a problem for which Gregorio holds the key to a solution.

How many times must we sit through another spy film where the old spy has to rescue the young spy from the clutches of the evil country at the time (which, nowadays, happens to be China).
A few parts of the film were difficult to accept such as trying to imagine Pitt and Redford, the pretty boys of two generations of modern film, trying to be tough and ruthless.
Another problem is the fact that the film spans 4 decades and no one ages at all – but hey, it’s a movie, I can use my imagination, and I’d rather have the same actors play the parts than to have younger look-a-likes lip sync the dialog.
