Interop New York 2007 - InteropNet - SpyNet
Interop SpyNet is an auxiliary "shadow" network not accessible by the public, built for the purpose of ensuring the integrity of the InteropNet.
The SpyNet is a virtualized network, allowing engineers to gain access to production traffic from anywhere at anytime — even when the network is under attack and highly compromised.
SpyNet has been a tradition of Interop and is accepted as an industry best practice.

 Interop - Inside Interop Blog
In this four-part Blog series, we shall introduce SpyNet which is both a tradition of Interop and an industry Best Practice.
SpyNet is an auxiliary “shadow” network not accessible by the public and is built for the sole purpose of mitigating business risks by ensuring the absolute integrity of the mission-critical event network (InteropNet).
SpyNet is now a virtualized data access network, allowing engineers to gain access to production traffic from anywhere at anytime and even when the network is under attacked and highly compromised.

Network Systems DesignLine | How to build a huge virtualized SpyNet
SpyNet was deemed necessary because time-to-resolution must be near immediate and also because InteropNet is physically spread out, thereby allowing the team to see MAC layer errors and traffic from anywhere without leaving the NOC.
SpyNet was a revolutionary concept when it was introduced and today it is accepted as an industry Best Practice.
The second reason for the need to virtualize SpyNet is the fact that there are now many monitoring tools, each requiring custom data access, each competing for scarce resources such as SPAN ports and taps, and each having a potential mismatch between available processing capability and bandwidth requirement.

 Blueprint: Metro Ethernet
The key technical challenge of SpyNet was to provide replica traffic from the InteropNet (using SPAN ports, external and internal taps, either optical or copper, ranging from 100M, to 1G or even 10G) and to channel this data to a variety of monitoring tools.
SpyNet is essentially the virtualization layer between the network and the tools, providing customizable data access and matching the bandwidth requirement of the business enabling production network and the bandwidth available on the mission critical monitoring tools.
Again, the fundamental building block is the data access switch which acquires traffic from multiple SPAN ports, aggregates and filters the aggregated traffic according to specific VLAN range (in order to segregate the total traffic by business groups), and multicasts the customized traffic to different tools.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware PCSTATS Review - Introducing SPYNET
SPYNET, not to be confused with the 'SkyNet' of the Terminator movies (or at least we hope not) seems to be a database of results shared by all Internet-capable systems running Microsoft's anti-spyware beta.
It's not clear whether SpyNet is self-maintaining, meaning that any system belonging to the community updates itself against new threats as they are revealed by other members, or whether Microsoft will use SpyNet information to design new definition files for the scanner.
The SpyNet description in the software itself seems to indicate that the former is true, but this would seem to present some logistical problems with false threats, etc. We'll have to keep an eye out for more info on this topic.

Microsoft: Buying Spyware Firm Fastest Path To Anti-Spyware Tools - Software Technology News by TechWeb
Among the things that Microsoft liked when it looked at Giant's anti-spyware efforts, said Mangione, were its real-time protection -- which keeps spyware from infiltrating the system -- and the ability of users to see what's been installed or changed on their machine.
SpyNet was Giant's term for the online communality which took submissions of suspected spyware from users, examined them, and then rolled out signatures to defend systems.
"We'll continue to use the SpyNet community," said Mangione, "which will allow our customers to participate by IDing potential spyware." Earlier, Microsoft said that submissions to SpyNet would be examined by its own researchers, and if deemed to be spyware, signatures would be written and released.
