The foundation to the first structure, a tetraconchal rotunda of St Vitus, was laid by Prince Vaclav in the first third of the 10th century, who later as a patron saint of the kingdom found his martyry in one of the apses.
In the year 1060, prince Spytihnev founded a two-chancel basilica of the Otonian type on the site of the rotunde.
The sacral buildings were completed in the last quarter of the 11th century by the first King of Bohemia, named Vratislav II.

On the obverse of this silver denar of Spytihnev II, Duke of Bohemia (1055-1061) is a portrait of St. Wenceslas, a ruler who had been assassinated by his pagan brother some 120 years earlier.
