A grey heron, a booted eagle, several flocks of alpine swifts, a hoopoe and thousands of house and sand martins.
A cuckoo and a pair of short toed larks, an adult golden eagle and four bonellis eagles flying together – 2 were adults, the third appeared to be last years chick and the fourth could have been this years chick, it certainly was very red as young birds are.
The herons and egrets have been particularly prominent and I have been asked why I bother to note the number of moorhens.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Nile Cruise
Pied kingfishers, squacco heron, at least 10 turtle doves, palm dove, chiffchaff, bulbul and Nile valley sun birds.
Squacco heron was added from the cabin and even glossy ibis when the rest went off to see Edfu Temple.
Birds were coming in thick and fast with a possible bittern in one corner of a reed bed and then a striated heron on the other side of the river.

This white and buff coloured heron was far from home.
I waited patiently for a while, enjoying watching tufted duck, moorhen, grey heron and mallard in the meantime, until the squacco heron reappeared from amongst the reeds.
Within a day or two the heron had moved on, disappearing as mysteriously as it arrived.

Kenya: Locally common on lakes, swamps and other bodies of water with floating or bordering vegetation.
Although Squacco Herons are a very common sight in Kenya, their breeding range is very limited.
The only regular site is close to the coast on the Tana river (near Garsen), although it occasionally breeds at other sites such as Lake Jipe.

Seeing me it hid in deep cover so I found some shade under a tree and settled down to wait.
This was the last in a sequence of pictures which has always given me some satisfaction.

A walk to the river Almiropotamos (west of Vatera) proved to hold still a lot of water, which couldn’t be said for the rest of the island.
The next 2 weeks the river held Little Bittern, Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Little Egret, Great White Egret, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Black Stork, Marsh Harrier, Little Ringed Plover, Little Stint, Ruff, Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper.
During all these walks birding proved to be very successful as you can take time and spot birds, butterflies and dragonflies very close.
