Marine Corps Sergeants Major serve as the senior enlisted Marine in the Corps' units of battalion, squadron or higher echelon, to assist the unit's commander and to handle matters of discipline and morale among the enlisted Marines.
In 1813, cavalry regiments introduced the Troop Sergeant Major to replace the Quartermaster as the senior NCO of a troop; this required the existing position to be explicitly redesignated the Regimental Sergeant Major.

Being the squadron baker he asked me to bake him a pie on one occasion.
It didn't take me but a minute to "get the drift." I continued to bake pies for the Sergeant Major the whole time we were at Newport, and each time I returned to pick up the empty pie plate, a 72 hour pass was "mysteriously" included with the empty pie plate.

A Company Sergeant Major (CSM) is the senior non-commissioned soldier of a company in the armies of many Commonwealth countries, responsible for standards and discipline.
A CSM, BSM or SSM is generally addressed as "Sergeant Major" (or often as "Sir" or "Ma'am" by subordinates).
However, a cavalry SSM is often addressed as "Mr (surname)" by officers, and as "Mr (surname), Sir" by his subordinates, with the salutation "Sergeant Major" being reserved for Staff Sergeants.

In May of 1976 Sergeant Major Price qualified as a Crew Chief on the CH-53D helicopter and served in this capacity until June of 1976 when he was transferred to HMM-165 aboard the USS Okinawa.
Sergeant Major Price was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in July 1983 and was assigned the duties of Drill Master of 1st Recruit Training Battalion until January 1985.

After passing promotion exams in 1985, I was made a Sergeant and posted to the RAC Gunnery school at Lulworth to be a school's instructor.
I was promoted to Staff Sergeant whilst in the post of SQMS, and after returning from the Gulf, moved with the Regiment back to the UK.
Our squadron was posted to Bovington as the support squadron, a role that allowed us to see and use most armoured equipment.
