Squall is a fairly quiet person who likes to keep his feelings and emotions to himself for the most part and lacks in terms of spirit and teamwork.
But Squall does appear to have a link to Laguna and they are related in some way as well but most of all, Rinoa has the biggest impact on Squall as she has strong feelings to Squall and also, Squall cares for her later on in the game.
While Squall lacks emotion, he in fact hides them and his past is kind of tragic and sad as Squall was raised in an orphanage and he was used to taking care of himself without the help of others.
