Epithelium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In zootomy, epithelium is a tissue composed of a layer of cells.
The one cell layer of simple squamous epithelium is a minimal barrier to diffusion.
Places where squamous cells can be found include the alveoli of the lungs, the filtration of the kidneys, and the major cavities of the body.

Epithelium is one of the 4 primary tissues of the body.
Epithelium is found covering the numerous internal and external surfaces of the body and may also be modified to form glandular structures.
Stratified squamous epithelium is found in the skin and in the passageways leading to the exterior, such as the mouth, anus and vagina.

Entoderm is the source of origin for the epithelium of the esophagus, stomach, intestines and the structures, which open into the intestinal tract (liver, pancreas, and gallbladder).
For example, the epithelium (epidermis) of the skin is classified as keratinized (cornified) stratified squamous; the epithelium of the esophagus is a moist type of stratified squamous; the lining of the stomach and intestines is simple columnar.
The epithelium on the oral surface is stratified squamous.

The transition from the columnar epithelium of the endocervix (en) to the stratified squamous epithelium of the exocervix is abrupt and defines the original squamocolumnar junction (oscj).
The stratified squamous epithelium reacts to estrogen by proliferating and maturing, with cornification of the superficial cells.
During this process, the squamous epithelium may overgrow the columnar papillae and obstruct the crypt openings to form mucous (Nabothian) cysts (nc), the mucin-distended cyst spaces are lined by low columnar endocervical cells.

The epithelium facing the lumen of the esophagus is an example of a stratified squamous epithelium.
An epithelium always rests on a basal lamina, and this basal lamina is the interface between the epithelium and underlying connective tissue.
Skin is another example of a stratified squamous epithelium, but unlike the esophagus or cornea, this epiethelium is not constantly wetted by tears or saliva/mucous.

Squamous epithelial cells are typically inconspicuous in cross section, appearing as thin lines with a bulge at the nucleus.
A stratified squamous epithelium is quite thick, with squamous cells on the surface overlying deeper layers of taller cells.
Simple squamous epithelium may be located at sites of rapid diffusion, such as the lining of lung alveoli, the lining of blood vessels (called endothelium), and at sites where very little activity is occuring, such as Bowman's capsule in the kidney and the lining of major body cavities (called mesothelium).
