  Astronomy 104 Lab #4
Multiply the number of stars per square degree by the estimated angular area (in square degrees) per star to find the fraction of a typical square degree that is covered with star disks.
The 1/2 centimeter squares marked in red on the centimeter side of your transparent rulers correspond to 1/120 of a square degree on the scale of the Palomar prints, so you need to multiply your counts by 120 to get the estimated number of stars per square degree.
The smaller squares 1/8 inch on a side (found on the inch side of the ruler) correspond to 1/300 square degree, so multiply counts made in them by 300.

Degree (angle) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A degree (in full, a degree of arc, arc degree, or arcdegree), usually symbolized °, is a measurement of plane angle, representing 1/360 of a full rotation.
For the number of degrees in a circle to be divisible by every number from 1 to 10, there would need to be 2520 degrees in a circle, which is a much less convenient number.
When this is not the case, as in astronomy or for latitudes and longitudes on the Earth, degree measurements may be written with decimal places, but the traditional sexagesimal unit subdivision is commonly seen.

Squares make up a group of tools that are indispensable to carpenters, woodworkers, tile setters, machinists, and anyone else who needs to make certain their projects are, well, square.
The thicker body of the square is placed against the edge of a piece of wood and the blade is placed on top of the wood, which ensures that the blade is then exactly perpendicular to the edge of the board.
The entire square is manufactured from one piece of metal to ensure durability and accuracy, and both legs are marked with standard inch and fraction graduations as well as a variety of tables and framing information.

The number of "square degrees" in a sphere is not 360x360, since even around the equator 360 degrees don't quite fit (the tops and bottoms overlap a tiny bit).
So, to calculate the number of steradians in a "square degree," I'd find the equations of 4 planes that mark out a region which, when looked at from the center of the sphere, is one degree on a side.
The difference between the sum of the four angles and 2*pi is the solid angle represented by a "square degree".

increases the degree of membership of all the elements of a set that are already half members or better and decreases the degree of those members less than half in the set.
In particular it raises the degree of membership of elements already having a degree of membership greater than.5, and it lowers the degree of membership of elements already having a degree of membership less than.5.
The membership and the corresponding degree of membership in each subset are determined by the product of the degree of membership of the element in A and a function, K(x), which thereby acquires special importance.

Not only is that square probably not square itself, but you are relying on your eye to see a minor squaring error over a rather short length.
This method is more accurate than the best steel square because you are not relying on eyeballing several teeth on the blade to a square's steel edge, but are comparing a saw-cut edge with itself.
If you were building a house, one degree of error wouldn't be noticeable, but if you were building a chess board, then even 1/100 of a degree is going to show.

The initial "5-degree quadrant" digit is retained for compatibility with searches on 5-degree squares, even though it is theoretically redundant when only 100 squares require to be encoded; thus, each 1-degree c-square is encoded by three digits rather than the two which would be used if no compatibility with 5-degree squares was retained.

Rather than thinking in terms of degrees, it is simpler to express Gann angles in terms of units of time by price.
