  The Reef (Square) Knot
To tie the knot move the mouse along the numbers 1 - Reef.
Admittedly it is usually a bow that we tie - but the underlying knot is a Square (Reef) Knot.
We also learn just how unsatisfactory the knot is. It slips, it comes undone, it jams, and it is all too easy to tie a granny instead which behaves even less well.

Knot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Knots have been the subject of interest both for their ancient origins, common use, and the mathematical implications of knot theory.
A rope containing a knot is weaker than an unknotted rope, because the loops of the knot impose uneven stresses upon the rope fibers.
For example, loop knots share the attribute of having some kind of an anchor point constructed on the standing end (such as a loop or overhand knot) into which the working end is easily hitched to using a round turn.

 KAP knots and hitches
Knots and hitches are utilized for many purposes--joining two lines together, making a loop in a line, shortening lines, stopping lines, and attaching lines to anchors--posts, rings, cleats, etc. In fact, it is impossible to fly kites without the ability to tie a few basic knots.
A knot or hitch has two characteristics in terms of its potential effectiveness--strength and slippage, both of which are important for deciding which knot to use for a given purpose.
This compound knot combines the characteristics of the clove and half hitch into a knot that is quite strong and highly resistant to slippage.

SQUARE KNOT (a joining knot, also known as a Reef Knot) An excellent general purpose knot for tying two pieces of string or twine together, the reef knot is possibly the most commonly used knot for the job, and is easy to learn.
However, it cannot be overly stressed that the Square (Reef) knot is not a long term or secure knot, and it should only be used to finish parcels or bindings.
The square knot is also known as a joining knot because it can join together two ropes and because it is the first knot Scouts learn when they join the BSA.

Mathematical knots   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Knot theory is a branch of algebraic topology where one studies what is known as the placement problem, or the embedding of one topological space into another.
Thus a mathematical knot is somewhat different from the usual idea of a knot, that is, a piece of string with free ends.
Knots that are equivalent to the unit circle are considered to be unknotted or trivial.

The knot that is most commonly used for fastening ropes or strings together is the square knot, also known as the sailor's, or reef, knot.
The square knot is always used by sailors in reefing a sail, that is, shortening a sail by tying back a portion.
The term knot derives from its former use as a length measure on ships' log lines, which were used to measure the speed of a ship through the water.

Thief knot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uses: It resembles the square knot, aka reef knot except that the free, or working, ends are on opposite sides.
It is said that sailors would secure their belongings in a ditty bag using the thief knot, often with the ends hidden.
If another sailor went through the bag, the odds were high the thief would tie the bag back using the more common square knot, revealing the tampering, hence the name.
