Inspired heavily by the Beatles and the Kinks, Squeeze was the vehicle for the songwriting of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, who were hailed as the heirs to Lennon and McCartney's throne during their heyday in the early '80s.
Squeeze never came close to matching the popularity of the Beatles, but the reason for that is part of their charm.
Squeeze began playing the thriving pub rock circuit, although their songs were quirkier and more pop-oriented than many of their peers.

As Squeeze concentrated on making albums rather than singles after Cool for Cats, Singles — 45's and Under, a compilation released soon after the announcement of the band's dissolution, was an oddly chosen eulogy.
As it was their decision to disband Squeeze and continue writing and performing together, Difford and Tilbrook surprised no one by releasing an album that, except for being funkier and even more boring, basically sounds no different from the band's lesser efforts.
The simple good-love-gone-bad concept album (the booklet is a script that incorporates song lyrics) attempts a breakup in the similarly intimate "Letting Go," but can't come to the point.

An interesting sidelight to the Squeeze story is the solo career of fleet-fingered pianist Jools Holland, who cut several eclectic solo albums during the 80s and 90s.
I have everything Squeeze ever released on CD other than a live album and a couple of greatest hits packages, but I'm planning to review them slowly, so don't be too taken aback by the glib one-liners I offer in several places.
With remarkable serendipity, Squeeze got off to a start with a disco novelty song that turned into a moderate hit single: "Take Me I'm Yours," which is driven by a really annoying, robotic synth line that would have been worthy of the Cars.

"Squeeze Box" is a moronic sexual pun that Townshend should never have sunk to (at least he didn't waste a good melody on it), and most of the others sound more like rejects from one of his solo albums than Who songs.
The reason this album (originally released in 1975, the version discussed here is the 1996 remaster) wasn't doing well was of course the growing punk-movement (with the Who being their main victims...).

Along the way the story uncovers the truth behind the brilliant but often fractious Tilbrook/Difford partnership, the formation of the band and subsequent line-up changes, gruelling tours, towering successes and disappointing failures and the inevitable rock ‘n’ roll excesses that are part and parcel of being in a famous group.

This is the kind of material that just wouldn't sound right coming from the silver tongued Tilbrook, and somehow Difford's delivery meshes perfectly with the subject matter of the songs to paint a picture of a man who is in turn cranky, self depreciating, inebriated and world-weary.
One of the most fun things about getting a new Squeeze album is listening out for the Difford tracks, and often you can tell he's going to be taking the lead vocal just from listening to the first few bars of music.
One of the major shortcomings of the 'Play' album was the complete absence of an eccentric Difford track, and the whole album was rendered rather humourless as a result.

With previous albums, Difford and Tilbrook were able to make incisive observations on British life; the same holds true here, but the alcohol-soaked imagery and chaos between the lines of songs also reveals much about the internal problems of the band.

Squeeze Box King, MP3 Album Music Download at eMusic
On Squeeze Box King, Jimenez drops the pop sheen and steps out into more traditional grassroots territory with a selection of polkas, boleros, and rancheras, all done with a sparse and genuine conjunto swing.
The album opens with a well- known party polka, "En El Cielo No Hay Cerveza" ("In Heaven There Is No Beer"), but the version here is truly unique, with verses sung in English, Spanish, and Dutch, making it undoubtedly the first tri-lingual polka ever attempted.
The Cumbia beats on "Ojitos Negros" mark it as a highlight, and the Afro/Cuban boleros are striking, as well, particularly the haunting "Tan Sola." The heart of the album, though, is Jimenez's Tex-Mex approach to the four rancheras ("De Donde Has Sacado," "Tumbo Sin Flores," "La Rosa Negra," and the album's closer, "La Tormenta").
