She made her debut (1856) at the Lyceum Theatre, London, and in 1865 became joint manager of the Prince of Wales's Theatre, London, with Sir Squire Bancroft, 1841-1926, whose entire name was Squire Bancroft White Butterfield.
With their production of Caste in the same year, the Bancrofts, as co-stars, began an association with its author, Tom Robertson, that was to prove most successful.

Mr and Mrs Bancroft were associated in the production of all the Robertson comedies :Society (1865), Ours (1866), Caste (1867), Play (1868), School (1869) and M.P. (1870), and, after Robertsons death, in revivals of the old comedies, for which they surrounded themselves with an admirable company.
The Bancroft management at the Prince of Waless constituted a new era in the development of the English stage, and had the effect of reviving the London interest in modern drama.
Having made a considerable fortune, they retired in 1885, but Mr Bancroft (who was knighted in 1897) joined Sir Henry Irving in 1889 to play the abb Latour in a revival of Watts Phillipss Dead Heart.

At the Prince of Wales's, John Hare created major character parts in all the comedies of T W Robertson, including Sam Gerridge in Caste (1867), in which the preparation of tea and sandwiches in the first act was a famed comic tour de force of the period.
It was a revival of The Squire that was to be the last performance presented at the St. James's Theatre by the Hare-Kendal management team.
The last performance of The Squire, on July 21, 1888, was a brilliant one before a brilliant audience, the cheers that greeted Hare and the Kendals were enthusiastic.

She was also a successful adult burlesque-extravaganza actress who went on to manage her own company at the out-of-the way, low rent Queens Theatre…also known as the "dust hole." In 1865, it was renamed The Prince of Wales’s Theatre.
Ellen had played the provinces for the Bancrofts and after Irving retired, she went on to manage the Imperial Theatre.

This adobe is next door to the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce building on Bancroft Drive.
It was reported by its second owner, Captain Rufus Porter, to have been built by Squire A. Ensworth, and to have incorporated in it the oak timbers of a coaling hulk, the Clarissa Andrews, which was owned by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company and lay off La Playa for many years.
Hubert Howe Bancroft bought the ranch in 1885, when the house was twenty-nine years old.

He received a knighthood from Queen Victoria in 1895, the first actor ever to achieve the accolade.
Irving invited Charles Wyndham, J. Toole and Squire Bancroft, together with other prominent members of the theatrical profession, to dine with him one evening in the Beefsteak Room, and it was on their collective initiative that a decision was made to found a charity to be known as the Actors’ Benevolent Fund.
This first committee meeting of the fledgling charity took place on the 4th May 1882.
