Like Guy, the Zippers conjure a musical past into a new living sound, mixing in a healthy dose of artistic invention with various strains of American music, ancient to the present.
On one of those warm, happy nights, sparked by a favorable moon, liquor and chicken grease, the music and Katherine's desire to sing combined and co-mingled, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers were born.
He was trying to divine a new Zippers sound, one that embraced all of the changes in the band, while harkening back to the simple inspirations of their past.

  Squirrel Nut Zippers
Of all the bands on the current Retro Swing scene, the Squirrel Nut Zippers are by far the most successful and prominent; after extensive MTV exposure, their sophomore album, "Hot", went gold (having sold five hundred thousand copies or more) and is presently zoning in on the Platinum million mark.
Squirrel Nut Zipper Tom Maxwell paints the sentimental old singers in the same ironic light that soloists receive: his vocal swoops and note bending on "Twilight" couldn't be less serious.
Squirrel Nut Zippers employ the same technique; the opening of "St. Louis Cemetery Blues" includes violin, guitar, and bass clarinet creating an interlocking musical structure.

Squirrel Nut Zippers came together with the greatest of ease.
The Zippers played old-style jazz in the spirit of Fats Waller and Billie Holiday, but their nervous energy and jittery tempos betrayed their underground-rock pasts in Metal Flake Mother, Rubbermaid, What Peggy Wants and other local bands.
The Zippers had a handshake agreement with the owner of the Massachusetts-based Squirrel Nut Zipper candy company to use the name.

Amazon.com: Hot [ENHANCED CD]: Music: Squirrel Nut Zippers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
When North Carolina's Squirrel Nut Zippers scored an unlikely late '90s hit with "Hell" (from their Hot album), many cynics (and a few critics) thought the band was merely mocking the hot jazz stylings of the '20s and '30s.
The Zippers have honed both their chops and their courage here, with subtle new influences from the 20th-century American musical pantry (a dash of country, a pinch of Spanish guitar, more Crescent City bump) tastefully simmered into the stew.
The Squirrel Nut Zippers are vastly overlooked and underrated.

Swing is back because it's amazing music, and the bands that crank out the stuff (although, if you want to argue it, the Squirrel Nut Zippers are more Charleston-oriented, but it's all in the same family) put on live shows that are almost unparalleled experiences.
No more than two minutes later, the already deafening crowd got even louder as Squirrel Nut Zippers took to the stage again, this time accompanied by guest-violinist from their albums and the first band, Andrew Bird.
The stage presence of these guys and gal was terrific, and their musical expertise makes the Squirrel Nut Zippers a band whose show you really don't ever want to miss.

Keeping pace with the fashionable Colorifics before them, the six members of the Zippers were also dressed to the nines, retro suits and winged tipped shoes figuring highly.
It struck me, though, that while the Colorifics appeared dressed for the stage, the Zippers were at ease in their duds, suggesting that they throw them on every day.
Her presence and voice were so sublime that I felt convinced that on Judgement Day she'll be the person to welcome me to 'the other side.' Evoking the 'Hide and Seek' follies of the 1920's, Whalen is truly a deliciously offbeat performer.
