Beyond all of SquirrelMail's built-in features, there's also a growing library of Squirrelmail plug-ins that you can download and install to add to or enhance the features of your system.
If you plan to use Squirrelmail with any frequency, think hard about the security of your email and the password you use to retrieve it.
Additionally, Apache can be configured to allow access to Squirrelmail using SSL (which is very useful for users outside of your private network).

iTools Beginner's Guide - Installing Squirrelmail
It must be a good package as Apple have added Squirrelmail in as part of the default installation on Mac OSX Server, but users of Mac OSX 'client' should have not trouble getting it up and running on their machines.
One thing that Squirrelmail does require is having your webserver PHP enabled, but this is not at all difficult for iTools users as Tenon have a prebuilt package available for installation, making it pretty much a point and click excercise.
One problem I encountered during a much older Squirrelmail installation was that the php.ini file needed to have a setting called register_globals changed from OFF to be ON.

Some may be even better (though squirrelmail is great), but my choice of squirrelmail was mainly driven by the fact that it comes with RedHat Linux, and you do not have to compile, install, etc...
There are probably many ways around it, like creating links (Squirrelmail will allow you to create folders and will look under /home/yourname/mbox, so you can create links), but I did not study the matter.
For the purpose of the illustration, let assume that the machine with Web server (and squirrelmail) is called www.myexample.com, and the machine on which the sendmail (and imap) run, is called mail.myexample.com.

SquirrelMail 1.4.6 on RedHat Linux 9 - Part 1 - Installing SquirrelMail & Configuring the Apache Virtual Host
The SquirrelMail tutorial is the second part of a series I started this week on installing webmail access on a server.
We're going to create some directories, move the SquirrelMail files to the document root, move the data folder outside the document root, and change ownership of the data folder to the apache user (or whatever user your httpd process runs as).
SquirrelMail will need to be able to write to this directory and our httpd process runs as apache.

There are many, many more advantages to using SquirrelMail that I won't attempt to discuss here, but it is well worth the effort of installing it and giving it a try.

SquirrelMail is an open-source program to be installed on Web servers to allow access to e-mail through a Web interface.
In the Personal Information page, there are some straightforward items like supplying your name and e-mail address to be used in the "From" header of your outbound mail, entering a signature block in a text area, and setting your time zone.
Basically, SquirrelMail generates nice, clean plain text messages with a standards-compliant line length; it doesn't commit any of the formatting errors many other mail programs do.

I mostly use SquirrelMail whilst I'm at work because of the brick, er, firewalls won't allow IMAP access at all.

The first vulnerability in Squirrelmail allows an attacker to read information from any file to which the web server user account has rights without logging in to the server.
Since Squirrelmail is not a widely used software package, a Network based IDS would not likely have had the signature of this attack in it's database.
The source code for the vulnerable Squirrelmail application (version 1.0.4) is available from SourceForge at http://sourceforge.net/proje c t/showfiles.php?group_id=311.
