Politics of Sri Lanka takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Sri Lanka is both head of state and head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system.

Other relevant groups are the Buddhist clergy; the Sri Lanka Trade Unions; the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or LTTE (terrorist group fighting for a separate state) and radical chauvinist Sinhalese groups such as the National Movement Against Terrorism as well as Sinhalese Buddhist lay groups.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party of President Chandrika Kumaratunga released a statement on November 4, 2003, outlining its response to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam's proposals for an Interim Self Governing Authority for the North East region of the country.
The SLFP under the leadership of President Kumaratunga is clearly of the view that the solution to the ethnic conflict lies in the devolution of power within a united Sri Lanka on the basis of a negotiated Constitutional arrangement, such as the one contained in the draft Constitution of 2000 and its earlier version.
The SLFP will not allow any international consortium or "safety net", in the name of a spurious, unjust peace, to foist on the people of Sri Lanka any extra Constitutional arrangement that is not acceptable to all the People, all the communities that inhabit our land.

The clear statement that the dominant political party in the country is for a unitary state is bound to lead to a clash with the Tamils, both extremist and moderate, because what unites the Tamils is the demand for a federal Sri Lanka with power being devolved to a united Tamil-speaking North Eastern Province.
The SLFP has not only rejected federalism but has proposed that the unit of devolution be the district and not the province.

One Party State in Sri Lanka:Political Ideology - Anti Tamil
There is the right wing United National Party (UNP), the supposedly socialist Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the so-called “Marxist” Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the Marxists of yester-year, the Lanka Sama Samaga Party (LSSP), the political party of not-so-clean-shaven men in yellow robes, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), and many more of their ilk.
Every one of these parties without exception tries to outdo each other in their ‘anti-Tamilness’ to secure the electoral support of the Sinhala majority which they hope will propel them to political power (the passport to mega-corruption in Sri Lanka).
The blatant anti-Tamil stance of the SLFP under Bandaranaike, his wife and daughter have been matched by a similar anti-Tamil stance by the UNP under Senanayake, Jayawardene and Wickremasinghe (all of them kinsmen).
