Brendan was interred in Clonfert in 577 A.D. at the age of 93 and his feast is on 16 May. Here you will find one of the most highly developed examples of Irish Romanesque Architecture in the form of a magnificent doorway.
Brendan of Ardfert and Clonfert, known also as Brendan the Voyager, was born in Ciarraighe Luachra, near the present city of Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, in 484; he died at Enachduin, now Annaghdown, in 577.
Brendan called this island "The Paradise of Birds." He referred to the larger island as the "Island of Sheep." The word Faroe itself means Island of Sheep.

Little is known of the historical Brendan, who died in 578 as abbot of a Benedictine monastery which he had founded twenty years previously at Clonfert in eastern Galway.
Columbus, in his journal for the 9th of August 1492, states that the inhabitants of Hierro, Gornera and Madeira had seen the island in the west; and Martin Behaim, in the globe he made at Nuremberg in the same year, places it west of the Canaries and near the equator.
Similar voyages of discovery were made by the Canarians in 1604 and 1721; and only in 1759 was the apparition of St Brendans island explained as an effect of mirage.

St Brendan is chiefly renowned for the semi-legendary Voyage of St Brendan, in which he is said to have set out onto the Atlantic Ocean with sixty pilgrims, searching for the Garden of Eden.
On his trip, Brendan is supposed to have seen a blessed island covered with vegetation; convinced that he had seen Paradise, he returned to Ireland.
Christopher Columbus may have relied on the legends told of St Brendan as part of his argument that it was indeed possible to travel to Asia by crossing the Atlantic.

Between the years 512 and 530 St. Brendan built monastic cells at Ardfert and at Shanakeel or Baalynevinoorach at the foot of Brandon Hill.
The old Irish Calendars assigned a special feast for the Egressio familiae S. Brendani on 22 March; and St Aengus the Culdee in his Litany composed at the close of the eighth century invokes "the sixty who accompanied St. Brendan in his quest for the Land of Promise".
It is possible that Brendan may have encountered the Shetland Islands on his journey perhaps being their first historical coloniser as the Orkney Islands were recolonised by Christian missionaries about this time.

The account of Brendan’s voyage contained a detailed description of the construction of his boat which was not unlike the currachs still made in County Kerry today.
Brendan called this island “The Paradise of Birds.” He referred to the larger island as the “Island of Sheep.” The word Faroe itself means Island of Sheep.
There is also a Brandon Creek on the main island of the Faroes, that the local people believe was the embarkation point for Brendan and his crew.

Approximately 2 miles South West of Cottels Island (St. Brendans) and 4 miles North East of Burnside (and only 21 miles Northwest of Cabot’s Landfall), lie a small group of islands known as Flat Islands, or Samson’s Islands.
