The Alabama leather flower forms from a single rhizome that emerges in dense clusters up to 12 inches tall.
The blue-violet, bell-shaped flower blooms from late April to May. It grows in soils of sticky, silty clay in grass-sedge vegetation that is found primarily along highway rights-of-way.
It is currently found at two sites: in St. Clair County, where 50 clones grow along a roadside right-of-way and adjacent woodland; and in Cherokee County, where a few clones occur along a highway right-of-way.
